G'day mates,
I'm "still" researching “suitable for my needs” vessels and while searching I found a site where the owner, a working class Aussie, is cruising
Australia and
Asia on a 47' MV...On a budget! His is a converted King Island Cray
Boat and his site makes interesting reading. You can visit from
this link.
I'm pretty well set on a 36 to 40' Tri' but have not closed the door on other vessels...That's how I found the site on world cruising a MV on a
budget.
So! What's my question! I would like to hear from people who
cruise a lot, in a pure MV or a
Sail boat. I would like to know the following from MV sailors:
What size is your MV: i.e. 30', 35', 40' or whatever
What engine/s
power your MV: i.e. Detroit/s, Ford/s, Volvo/s, whatever.
What
fuel you use,
Diesel or Gas/Petrol:
What is the speed of your MV: i.e.
cruise speed 8kts, full speed 12kts, or whatever.
What is the “most economical” cruising speed for your MV:
At what Revs do you run for most economical cruising speed:
How much
fuel have you used over the past three years:
How far did you travel on the fuel used in that three years:
Where did you travel in that three years:
That's about it from all you MV sailors

For you sail-boat sailors, I would like similar figures
What size is your
Sail boat: i.e. 30', 35', 40' or whatever
What engine/s
power your
boat: i.e. Detroit/s, Ford/s, Volvo/s, whatever.
What fuel you use,
Diesel or Gas/Petrol:
How many times, in the past three years, have you had to use the
motor because there was no
wind:
How much fuel have you used over the past three years:
How far did you travel on the fuel used in that three years:
Where did you travel in that three years:
What
sails or
rigging have you replaced in the past three years:

There ya go mates, if you keep decent records on running costs (and we should all do that), answering the questions that apply to you and your vessel “should” be no-problem for anyone, sail boat or MV
It should make interesting reading and help people figure-out “some” of the cost in owning a vessel.
Cheers mates,
Bill
