I would recommend avoiding one with a tiller and instead opt for one with a "destroyer" steering wheel. Also, get a bow thruster. Nothin says "macho" like a bow thruster!

Kidding aside, are you serious? Are you really worried that you might accidentally buy a girls boat and your guy friends will ridicule you?

100% on the steering wheel, but bow thrusters could do without. Not worried about any sort of ridicule no, just trying to get more familiar with scenery. Never grew up around any boats so starting from scratch.

Okay, if that's the case then I suggest you start by identifying a couple boats that appeal to you or seem like they would be meet your needs, then come back to the forum for feedback on known issues about those particular boats to help guide you in your decision.

Mostly folks make fun of people because of their boat handling or what items they choose to equip their boats with rather than the kind of boat they are actually on, except Hunters.

For me personally I like to make fun of steering wheels on boats less than 30 feet, bow thrusters, full cockpit enclosures (unless in the PNW), wall-sized instruments displays at the helm that obscure forward vision, multihulls that weigh as much as a same-length monohull, poor sail trim, fenders hanging off the sides while underway, witty names like "Fantasea", that kind of stuff.

The best is when someone does something like adding a transom extension because their dinghy on davits is dragging their stern down and making weeds grow on their top sides above the boot top, got a good laugh out of that one!

A manly boat will have a tiller, no wheel (that's for sissies)
all halyards are winched at the mast (nothing back to the cockpit)
No furling main or jib (sissy stuff again)
no windlass (a real man hauls the anchor with his powerful biceps)
no head (just a bucket - a real man p*sses off the back end of the boat)
cup holders are sized for tallboy beer cans (coffee or worse tea! is for sissies)

If you follow the above, you'll also not have to worry about having women on board who will tell you how to sail.

OP: In your price bracket there are one or two brands mentioned above that will have many more features than other, far more seaworthy boats. The advice above, to find a few you like and submit those for discussion will achieve what you're after, a boat that's the real deal.

Don't be in a hurry, and don't be suckered by fluff and frills, and forget low priced fixer-uppers. Thar be dragons ....

Alright let's tone it down a bit please. Not once did I mention manly or macho as you can all see. I'm just learning what's what here. And good point about having a good head, I'm taking into consideration what I need personally as I prefer the solidarity. However from time to time there will be company.
