Hi Folks.

Thanks for the info on my boat registration and the wind/solar generators. I have a question. My boat is in St Martin and I have insurance but its not covered in a named storm. Does anyone have suggestions concerning good insurance cover.

Also, my boat, a 45 leopard catamaran will be on the hard during the H season. Am I over concerned to have it covered while on the hard?

Its my first season in the Caribbean so I am not sure how to deal with this. Some say they would cancel insurance while the boats on the hard while others say they would not.

Named storm coverage is available, but it typically adds ~$1,000 or so to the cost of the premium. Talk to your agent. We use Chandre Stemmers at Risk Benefit Solutions in South Africa as our agent. It seems to be a Lloyds policy. Never had a claim so don't know how well they work, but they were recommended by a cruiser who used to be in the marine insurance business.

Unfortunately, St Maarten is about in the middle of the hurricane track, so it's best to be prepared.

Not sure why you want your boat covered while it's on the hard. Easier to clean afterwards, I guess, but if a storm does come through, the cover is likely to be shredded. I'd be more concerned that it's well tied down. Multihulls can become airborne in a strong cyclonic storm.

I've always been able to buy named storm insurance coverage, but the deductible is twice the normal amount, and it boosts the annual premium by quite a bit.

I'd be more concerned about having my boat securely strapped down to yard anchors than putting a cover on it. You need to have good ventilation in the summer down here. I used hatch covers to keep the sun from streaming inside the boat.

Thanks, I will start looking into the info you sent. The cover I was talking about is insurance cover and not a cover for the boat. Funny.

If you are south of the Bahamas, Nagico Insurance is probably the best i have found. As long as you are in a hurricane hole it is covered for named storms......Check with them to make sure you are in a covered area...reasonable and no extra charge or whacky deductibles
