Re: Insurance for One Year TransPacific Cruise - Any Recommendations ?

Hi, i Just purchased a Brewer 42 in Turkey and plan to sail around the Med for a while then at some future date ( a year or so later) sail to Australia.

i have not insured a yacht before except for obligatory 3rd party.
I have crossed the Pacific on my previous yacht and sailed singlehanded from Malaysia to Darwin. I have taken a USCG Navigation course, Have a Pleasure vessel operators license in Queensland and also have passed a ships engineer certificate in Hong Kong. I want to apply for full insurance for a vessel of a value of $85,000. USD.

Which companies are best to approach and do I have sufficient credentials?
Not all test docs available but I can do Statutory Dec, Have the Aust license and can get testamonials from a friend who also crossed the Pacific at the same time as me.

What would be a guestimate of the annual premium?

Thanks

Hi Dennis and all,
Blue Water came in cheapest for me too @ Total Premium $3,313, discounted to $3170 for cash or cheque.

I was on the phone to Trident in WA today to clarify a few things and in the conversation they told they were always more expensive than Panaenius ( can't even say that name!) so I'm not going to bother applying further with them. They specifically required 2 crew with blue water experience too, even though I have 4 onboard to share watches thats not considered relavent or good enough.

Has someone encountered issues with Blue Water and talked about it on here, where?

I've just re-read the Pantaenius quote and note their third party indemnity @ $4,500,000 is far superior than Blue Water @ $500,000, so the extra $1000 or so premium may well be worth considering going with them. They also go on to give a quote for an extension in Australian waters, in other words once back coastal cruising the following year the premium would reduce to $1089.

I believe Pantaenius is well regarded, whats the word on Blue Water?

When I google searched bluewater I found a CF thread where someone was very irate about bluewaters ethics and customer service.

This is the second google result when you search for bluewater insurance. Not the best advertisement.

Dennis, I think you have just saved me from doing business with Blue Water!
Looks like I'll go with Pan, Pantaen....you know who I mean! It's a grand extra but hey, we're big shot yacht owners!

The other thing you have to look closely at the policy to learn is whether they pay replacement cost for something that is damaged, or they say "your engine was 10 years old and it was only worth $100, so that's all you get".
