Insurance company needed - US and SoPac

I've been through the book on this. It's for a 1988 Irwin 43 Mack III.

Originally, BoatUS/Geico said they would sell me a yacht package, but now they say the only cover the Caribbean and Bahamas for only a few days at a time. I called Global, and have a rep calling me back, but I know nothing about them, nor what a good international yacht policy should entail.

The 3 kinks are that it will be Canadian registered, berthed in WA State 3 months year, and the rest of the time cruising the SoPac.

All suggestions are much appreciated, ....just please don't tell me I don't need insurance.

Try calling BOAT Insurance Agency in Seattle (http://www.boatinsurance.net). I’ve had good results with them and they are a broker so will try to get multiple offers.

Wifey is on the FB page, Women Who Sail, and she just told me that subject has come up many times. I just asked her to post the question there too.

She LOVES that page! Might want to check it out.

Have you tried one of the brokers who regularly handle cruiser's offshore insurance?
Imus on the east coast. Novamar on the west coast.

Try Pantaenius for offshore/passagemaking insurance.

We insure with IMIS. Their Jackline policy will cover you most places on earth [but your policy is limited to the locations you choose... and they are very clear about areas/situations that are not covered...]

I consolidated what I have learned about insuring my [US Flagged] boats over the years in this one page write-up. And yes, I also recommend IMIS there as well.

Cheers! Bill

Thanks. I just sent off a quote request. Next, I'll try Pantaenius.

Novamar just emailed me with,

'Thank you for completing our Online Yacht Insurance Request form for yacht insurance coverage. Unfortunately, our program is targeted for vessels under 30 years of age and over $125,000 in value. I am sorry we are unable to assist. You might try IMIS Corp. www.imis.pro. I think their Jackline Program might be a good fit for you.'

If IMIS does not quote, I know of 3 other companies. Concept, Yachtinsure and Selecta, that should be able to provide you with quotes thru an agent.

Wow! I thought I'd run the gamut. Thanks!

Re: Insurance company needed - US and SoPac

FYI, when I was planning for the sail to Hawaii checked on getting insurance. Insurance was available but it was a bit pricey and required a minimum crew of three for the passage. Since I was sailing solo went without insurance for the passage.

Re: Insurance company needed - US and SoPac

When Pantaenius ‘fired’ us (never filed a claim in the 20 years that they were covering us), we switched to Topsail, which was about half the price of Pantaenius for the same level of coverage. However, we’ll probably drop Topsail once we get home and our circumnavigation is completed.

Fair winds and calm seas.

Thanks for that. I sometimes catch a posting of WWS when a friend makes a comment there, but I mostly keep it in the background because it clutters my feed. I tend to use FB for updates on sailing news and notifications from federal agencies on meetings and such. Weird combination, I know...

You have received some great suggestions here. My boat is now 31 years old and valued at less than $100K so I'm guessing it's not going to be so easy to find an insurer either.
