Re: I'm in Canada and Need Insurance for Boat in the States

Wow, i see what you mean. I am in a pretty similar position: I am buying a boat that I don't want to register in canada (and may never bring here, ever) but no american companies will insure it since I am canadian, but none of the canadians will insure it cause it isn't registered in canada!

i can't believe how difficult this is--I called because on my thread about flagging, people said ultimately the captain i can hire depends on insurance. What a crock of crap...

I don't want to bring my boat to canada because it will cost me another 300,000 to do so, which for me means ANOTHER investor in my business. What a PIA!!!!

Can i jump up and down and scream with you?

I hate to say this, but if you don't need marine insurance for something like a loan I would just skip it. At least in the USA marine insurance has to be one of the most overpriced boat items, and that is saying a lot, and they don't make it easy to buy unless you fit into one of their mass-market categories. Plus, when you really need it collecting is not always easy.

Your boat doesn't need to be in Canada in order for you to register it as a Canadian boat and you don't need to pay taxes until you bring it to Canada.

Duty? Payable with Canadian Custums / Douane when the boat enters Canada. If you don't enter Canada, no duty.

For registration in Canada the owner must be a Canadian citizen or a company registered in Canada.

ciao!

I know someone with a similar dilemma. He was unable to get any insurance in American waters. He ended up using a friend's American address for his insurance application, and it worked. However, insurance fraud usually ends badly if claims are ultimately filed. You may just have to sail American waters with NO insurance, and if you have a boat loan, you may just have to sail American waters realizing that in essence, you have no insurance on them.

Try this insurance company, it has been in business fro many years and they handle all kind of situations.

120 South Town Centre Blvd.
Markham ON, L6G 1C3
Direct: 905-752-8729

I'm not from ON, my boat will be in Kingston and everything went smoothly, they have some restrictions and/or premiums for south of the 40th paralel navigation.

Re: I'm in Canada and Need Insurance for Boat in the States

We used our residential broker to find insurance for the boat. He's been a real doozer from the get go and didn't let us down on the boat either. We bought the boat in Seattle and were able to bind the insurance on closing at which point she was still in the US registry. Then we brought her north and registered her with a SK port of registry because that is our residence. I can't remember the carrier for the insurance - "Beacon" maybe - but he had a couple of choices for us so they're out there if your agent knows what he is doing.

Re: I'm in Canada and Need Insurance for Boat in the States

I know that this is an old thread but I wanted to know if the Canadian was finally able to insure his Canadian registered boat while it resided in the USA.

I didn't realize that this would be a problem. Has anyone recently done this, or not been able to do it?
