I know a sailor so cheap he....
Good morning. I know there's a few threads on how to save money. I thought I would start this thread with the extreme ways some of us go to save money.
A little background. Beth is berthed in a quiet backwater where old retired salts live on their slowly decaying homes and talk of better times.

Re: I know a sailor so cheap he....
One of our sailors burns scrap wood for heating. Old pieces of dock sometimes disappear during the winter!
He's been caught retrieving wood from various sources, but what are you really going to do?

Re: I know a sailor so cheap he....
That sounds like a perfect place for me, maybe I can winter there next year.

Re: I know a sailor so cheap he....
It's dangerous to generalize but my experience has been that sailors will spend money for quality, but they will spend a lot of time trying to avoid spending the money.
I once was helping a very nice guy in my store find things on his list. He would look at each item and then it would either go in his basket or back on the shelf. The last thing on his list was fifty small screws. They came to a couple of dollars. He thought about it for a few seconds then he said "I think I'll just polish my old ones". I asked him what kind of boat he had. Sure enough it was a sailboat.
Since this is primarily a sailing forum, most of you will think he made a smart decision. If you'd rather spend a couple of bucks than spend half an hour polishing screws, you might be a power boater.

I'm so cheap I bought a waterfront house on a canal so I could have free moorage with free Dungeness crabs in season.

Re: I know a sailor so cheap he....
I knew a sailor so cheap.........we were all living aboard at a marina and this guy would get up every morning, throw on a pair of shorts and T-shirt, grab his ditty bag and towel to go stand in line at the marina bathroom door to take a shower. There was only one shower. This happened every morning.
Noticing his boat was not small and probably had a shower aboard, unlike the other sailors in that line, I thought maybe his shower was broken. But after a few weeks of this daily song and dance I figured he was trying to save water and power. Then I realized water and power were included in our slip fees.... I waited a few more weeks before the exasperation got to me and in a weak moment I just had to ask.
"Hey, Mark. I thought you had a hot water shower aboard but I see you lining up every morning to take a shower on shore. What's up?"
"That's right," he answered, "I got a shower but I'm not gonna use up my pump!"

I know many sailors so cheap they buy a boat then gut it and start over! Oh wait... that's expensive!

I know a sailor so cheap that...Hey senor, can I put a mooring ball in front of your house and store my boat there???
BTW... I swear this true. I know a sailor so cheap that he wants to be alerted every time I throw away things from my boat. He recycles and uses most of them!

I know a sailor so cheap (actually 3,000+ of them) who'd rather hang out on the free forum asking questions than buy a book or pay a pro for the answers.

I know a sailor so cheap he built a contraption so the sailboat can be removed from the water and stored at home so he doesn't pay dock fees.

Sailors are so cheap they are called whistlepissers behind their backs. Because they pull into a marina, inquire about the price of diesel, when they hear the price they whissle and say, "where's the pisser?"
