Disabled Cat Owner and VAT in Europe

hello all,Ive built a 51 ft tehini wharram in africa, big flat deck and modified it for my wheelchair etcetc.
been sailing the east african coastline and indian ocean, dodging somalis and now getting hairy so
thinking to head to the med ,im a EU passport holder but wondering about being hit with VAT,and what value ''they''decide the boat is valued at?
been searching the web ,apparently if the boat is modified for my use i can get it in VAT free. But as usual no government authority answering any emails.
Does anybody have any idea on this scenario ,in short.(im the owner, built the boat with myself in africa,,,with help...have an EU passport and wondering about VAT in Europe.)
cheers for any info.

It can be a problem. If you are not a tax resident of any EU then you can avail of the 18 month exemption . The wheelchair mods are only VAT recoverable only in certain countries and it's a torturous process usually requiring pre approval and limited to specific things. I doubt you will be able to claim anything.

Otherwise VAT will be due on immediate import. The valuation is a haggle between you and Customs. ( you pitch it low, they frown, etc you get the idea)

Dave.

There used to be a clause in UK VAT about using a boat for 6 months as your sole residence prior to entry to europe, and thus being VAT exempt.

You will need to research it, and will probably only be applicable to UK registered vessel, and for someone returning to UK to live.

No that's gone all replaced by a EU wide Transfer of Residence" procedure. VAT laws are harmonised since the introduction of the single European act.

Note OP if you ate transferring your residence from outside the EU to inside you can bring in all your personal possessions VAT and duty free. But you have to satisfy the TOR requirements and that's generally requires a fixed permanent abode in the conventional meaning of the term.

Sorry OP refers to " original poster" ie you

TOR is " transfer of residence". A standardised ) mostly) method of legally transferring you domicile. Using TOR rules you can bring on personal possessions VAT free . But this only applies if you are moving more or less permanently to a new home
