good news and thanks for sharing positives!

Doesn't seem to bust the budget there, does it?

Grenada and south

Indy:
Welcome to Grenada. Since you are in Carriacou when heading south - if the winds and waves/swells are low, be sure to stop at Corn Store Bay on the northwest side of Ronde Island - the large island between Carriacou and Grenada. Great snorkeling and exploring as it is a deserted island. Be sure to dive your anchor as the holding is marginal.
- - There is no place to stop down the west coast of Grenada until you get to St Georges where the anchorage is outside at a place on the chart called Martin's Bay - between St Georges and Grand Anse Beach. You will see dozens of boats anchored there. You will notice that they are rather far offshore and the reason is the sea bottom closer to shore is rock and rubble. It is forbidden to anchor off Grand Anse Beach (the large curved beach just south) as it is for the giant resorts.
- - On the south shore there are numerous bays, the first being Prickly Bay which is wide open and has a lot of boats in it. But it is continually rolly as swells are not blocked from entering. If you want to anchor there find a spot on the west side up at the top just below the Coast Guard pier.
- - The next bay east is Mt Hartman, probably the best protected bay. It has a moderate amount of cruising boats in it and a marina - Martin's Marina. But it is very inconvenient to get to town from there as there isn't any bus service.
- - Slightly east of there is the western side of Hog Island which is the "long termers" anchorage of choice. It has a beach with tiki hut run by Roger and free parties on Sundays, sometimes with live bands. You can dinghy from Hog Island or anywhere in Clarkes Court Bay to Lower Woburn on the east side of the bay at the top. There is a ratty, barely held together floating dinghy dock there to tie up to. Then walk up to the main road and wait for a "bus". EC$2.50 per ride to town. Be sure to walk to the downtown bus station and get the "2W" (Woburn) bus to come back. The busses do not leave the bus station until they are full - which mean 20 to 25 people packed into the little van.
- - Next bay is Clarkes Court Bay which the main cruisers bay with numerous anchoring opportunities and two marinas - Clarkes Court Bay Marina and Whisper Cove Marina. The first is the main cruiser get together place for Wednesday's burger night with live music; Friday's fish fry; Saturday's pot luck dinners; and many other cruiser events on other days. Whisper Cove Marina is a little French marina with fresh bagguettes and round loaves of bread and a meat market. South at the entrance is Calvigny Island with an anchorage in the cut between it and the main island. You can get free wifi from the Le Phare Bleu marina through the cut. This area has a significant amount of cruiser activity with live bands and activities.
- - The main information VHF net is Mon-Sat on channel 68 at 07:30 and can be heard in all the bays from St Georges to Clarkes Court and beyond.
Currently we are in Hog Island west, but will be heading north in November. If you have any questions you can ask them on the morning net or give us a shout on the VHF after the net.
- - Most economical shopping in Grenada is Andell & Associates little store in the Carenage Bay just up from the fire station and their other store next door to the bus station. Next most economical is Food Fair on the west side of the Carenage Bay next to the "Nutmeg" restaurant. Fresh veggies can be purchased at the open market downtown St Georges or the NMIB co-op store on Young Street across from the Grenada National Museum. The most expensive foodstore is the IGA at Spiceland Mall at Grand Anse. But it sells the North American and European foods that are not available in the "local's" stores. There is a FoodLand market in the Lagoon that is a good compromise between the high prices of the IGA and the other stores. If you take your ship's papers and buy more than EC$100 they will give you a discount.

I for one agree with Don. How about moving the debate to another forum?

Tyrell Yacht Haulout at Cariacou

We just completed our haulout at TYH in Tyrell Bay of Carriacou.

This was oiur first haulout since Hong Kong in 2005. so the job was bigger
than normal.

We pulled the centerboards, inspected and painted them.

We painted a boot top on the boat

We sanded the bottom and primed a half dozen places where bare metal
showed thru.

We pulled the bobstay tang on the stem and primed that too

We water blasted both the bottom and the deck, since we painted the deck too.

Paul, the yard foreman was most accomodating to our needs which included three lifts with the travel lift, together with reblocking each time.

We were in the yard for two weeks.

Pegasus is 45 ft on deck, and that measurement was used for the billing.

We got 200 gal of water for the tanks too.

Our total cost was $ 514 USD or $1389 ECD.

We are very pleased with the results, and given the opportunity would
go there again.

Thank yoii Orissail for suggestions regarding Grenada. We will sail down the east side and enter Calvingny Harbour. We like this little hideaway.

Your suggestions regarding provisioniing agree with our earlier experience.

We must do some banking, thence are off to Trinidad.

Would seem best for us to stop in Tobago, and go via tobago to avoid the pirates.

As for much of your discussions of late.....

This thread was meant for the discussion of the practicalities of micro- budget cruising. I see much of it dominated by philosophical ruminations, instead.

Please keep in mind that more and more folks will need to cruise this way, as the economy continues to deteriorate.

Fair Winds,

INDY
