My plan is 25 years, assuming retirement at 60. If I live to 85, and statistics say I won't, then I won't be living in a boat or house by myself anyway, and liquidating what's left would put me in a retirement home for a few years
I was going to make that point.... Help your children to get started then budget the remainder to expire the same time you do.
Funerals are for the living, so least they can do is pay for it.!

That amount does not allow you to be frivolous with money, but also doesn't require you to worry over the cost of each meal or drink at the local bar.

We're only two summers into our first boat and in our early 40's, but this is my ultimate goal. We make $45,000/yr and I stress daily over every dollar. I'd love not to need to do that someday. So far we've never anchored which makes it hard to imagine not being in a marina. I like the marina, but we've got lots of time to learn and experience anchoring. I'd bet we'll do a little of both. We have a healthy retirement savings (thanks to an esop) so now I just need to sit down with a financial planner so I can figure out how soon we can get this dream going. For now we're thinking once the kidlet is in college (4 yrs-ish) transfer to Fla, get salt water experience, then head south. The tough part is going to be finding the $ for a bigger boat.

honestly.....I just don't think I could spend that much per month cruising Mexio even if I tried! The Med....ya...maybe I could on fine food and wine...but how in the world could you even spend close to $5K per month in Mexico?

Easy. First or 4th month/year engine fails, then need a new main, family sick have to go home, antifouling, etc etc. About 5 k averaged per month over an extended voyage.

SNIP
Maybe some folks do spend 5k average per month, which comes out to $US60,000 a year. But for other folks it might be cheaper to just buy a new $US50,000 boat every year.

I suspect that many cruisers do reach something like that figure, but fund a large chunk not in cash but through deferred maintenance - and a sale (to someone who thinks that just completed extended voyaging means ready to go again?).

Please send vital statistics, age, (hip/waist/chest) measurements and several recent photos. Do you cook? Do you own any clothes other than skimpy bikinis?

Stop being so gutless, ask the real question on your mind

Facts! Facts! Where are the facts!!!!!

Do you have personal experience?

They even have a minimum tax payable in Canada if all else fails and Ontario enacted a tax surcharge on incomes above $500,000.00 a couple of years ago which drove the tax rate to 60% combined. Want to bitch about something, complain about healthcare cause we sure don't get anything for the exorbitant taxes we pay.

Hope this makes your socialist side feel better. I am off to spend the money that the government left me to cruise on $5k month. Hope there is still a Canada pension when I am broke so I can join the $500mth club.
