Re: Cruising on $5,000 / Month

Time to resurrect this thread with some more real life numbers. This couple seems to be doing o.k. and well within the $5,000.

Re: Cruising on $5,000 / Month

There are two threads running "cruising on $5,000/month" (about 5 times my income) which on a year round basis is limited to a very few and $500/month which is tight but shows that world cruising is not only for the wealthy. I am not suggesting a third thread be started, but discussing something between "how much money can we spend" and "how cheaply can we do this" would be nice. My income is about $1000/month and I have figured I and another person can cruise quite comfortably on this (not including supplementing it by do odd jobs etc. for those can afford to cruise on more).

No problem. Give me a big boat and a couple of kids and I will spend this much too.

On the second thought, the boat is an optional extra.

$5000 a month? How much do you pay your Captain & Crew?

$500 to split between them. After all they are living on your boat so that should be eough for them to build thier own crusing kitty with.

Re: Cruising on $5,000 / Month

I started reading this thread for a reason. As a result of an accident I had several years ago, I have a structured settlement that will, on the day I retire at age 58, pay me exactly $5,000.00 a month tax free for life. So the title of this thread caught my attention. Only bad thing is, money don't start coming in on those abnnuities for another ten years. Then again, they start coming in the same year my daughter will graduate college, so maybe the timing is pretty good. Anyway, I plan to cruise on a $2000.00 to $2,500.00 per month budget and use the rest of my monthly income to fly my little girl out to wherever I am to see me.

Re: Cruising on $5,000 / Month

Welcome to the forum, Cowboy.
Sounds like a good plan, apart from the accident bit

Could be that $5000 will be worth about $2500 in 10 years time, and tax free that's a good enough liveaboard budget.

Re: Cruising on $5,000 / Month

50% loss in value of the dollar in 10 years time? I see it another way, 10 years gives time for this economic crap to pass over. I've watched the economy dump so many times, I don't really believe any of this will last that long. Besides, there is the trade off. If things go bad enough for $5,000.00 to only be worth around $2,500.00, that means boat prices will be way down from where they are now too, so the dollar will go farther.

Re: Cruising on $5,000 / Month

Looking carefully into my buget for refitting the Rapture and afterwards....
After refitting bank account will have a major depletion in it.
But my monthly after I start sailing for the love of it... will be around $1500 or a bit more. Which will have to build up a maintenance fund for the boat and a maintenance fund for me... Little minor details like Food, some clothing, and many more that don't come to mind right now for personal maintenance... Oh! and Books, just a dozen or so per month. Hey! I do enjoy reading...

Fair comment.... 10 years out is real crystal ball gazing stuff. I was just thinking printing $s at the current rate tends to be inflationary, but who really knows?

Here in Aus our 4 best economists (from our 4 big, and very successful banks) say by the end of 2011 the AUS $ will be US$0.84, .89, .94, and 1.10. And these are the 'experts' looking only 4 months out??

What chance have we mere mortals got?

Re: Cruising on $5,000 / Month

That's why everything is set up for me to retire to the seas when I retire. These idiots on the land keep screwing everything up. My monthly cruising expenses are covered by the settlement, so all I have to put away for retirement now is enough to purchase and outfit the boat. Anything left over just goes in the kitty. Then again, 10 years can sometines seem like an eternity.

Re: Cruising on $5,000 / Month

This site is all about getting out there and doing it. That's why there is such a large interest in the low dollar figures. I would rather start now on a budget of $500/month than work for 20 years to save up for the $5,000/month budget. "It costs whatever you have" right?

There's always a reason not to do something.
-Not enough money
-In the middle of a career/family
-Too old

Here's a new question (maybe I'll start a new thread)
How many people cruise for several years then go back to a land based life? House, job, etc. That's what I am planning. What is that like?
