Cruising Budget - Version 1000

I know, I know! The age old question that gets resolved about as well as guns and anchors threads! But we haven't tried recently so I'm going to try a new run at it because winter is coming and I don't know how many more I can face.

Poll results are goal the here, not a "it depends" debate that becomes a class warfare battle. To help remove the "it depends" lets leave out all boat upkeep/maintenance and focus on the non-boat part, but still this is a boat based question (let each person decide how much it will cost to maintain whatever boat they have). It doesn't really matter what type of cruising you do or how offen you eat out, drink at the bar, fly 'home", all thaat matters is how much you spend or plan to spend living as you move from place to place doing whatever on your boat.

If you have real life number by all means post it and the when/where you did it.

And I'm not a marketing gunu so we don't need to state how messed up my poll may be.

And hopefully everyone will vote for a change.

i wrote 500-700 as i use marinas in hurrycame season and for repairs. they get pricey, and boatkat doesnt like them.(less freedom)
my PLAN is to cruise on as little as possible. i also have a canal transit upcoming, so is gonna be a tad higher at some times and less at other times.....

The only answer to this question is not the one you want. So it is ask over and over again. My experience showed that I spent all that I had OR I denied that urge and saved what I could. I have not lived on a boat yet but I have lived in a house, a trailer house, a 5th wheel, a bus, a suv, a car, a range teepee, a tent, a friends couch, and so on. It is the same regardless. Some times I could save some, sometimes I could not. Unless you are a government that can borrow money " at will" you have to adjust how much you spend to match how much you have to spend. And more if you want to save.
Your answer depends on your self discipline.
You will spend all you have..... Or not.

$3,000 per month retirement/cruising fund.

$1,500 for cruising and $1,500 for emergency/airfara, etc. Don't have to get into the home accounts that way...

That's about the most coherent answer I have read on the question with no answer that is providable by other people .

while living in my house I took an average of the money I spent per month over the last year. Then I added up my assets and subtracted the amount for a boat and a healthy refit. For the next 25-30 years I can live exactly as I was while working, on a boat, in a marina. And have more "beer" money at the end of the month then I do now. "Beer" money will go into the maintenance kitty.

No car, but I found that I only drive places I really didn't want to go anyway. If I need to go someplace, I'll find a way.

Commuter cruising in Italy we spent $1500 a month for a family of four excluding insurance maintenance and travel expenses in Italy. Food we found to be cheaper then US if you stayed out of the restaurants.

Based on all the action the cruise of $500/mo has had I'm surprised it took so long to get a $500 or less vote.

Still real early, but it is looking that I'm shooting too high (means I can leave sooner)

2200 marina fee includes haul in and out and storage on hard for solid water season
125 in fuel
380 in overnight dockage fees
400 to provision the boat with basic food items for season.
650 in additional groceries for season ( chicken, milk, cream, eggs, bread, cheese etc)
300 for drinks ( panama jack, bailys, kamora, rum, vodka)
36 in charcoal and starter fluid
that would be the basics.
New plotter 500, new traveler 425, new standing rigging 1984, runnng rigging 465, interior improvements 2100, davits 1250, ground tackle 625,
Sails are next season 3478, and being able to really get out there and enjoy impossible
but i do manage an overnight weekly and a 14 day trip at the begining of summer and a second 14 days at the labour day week.
I only get to sail from around mid May to the second weekend of Oct which is haul out.

So I am around 341.00 per month based on 12 months 6 of which I get no use.

per month, but if your budget fits a choice we are going to need a lot of details

I will not get going until April next year and I figure the following for 1-2 people without going mad:

Insurance = $30AUD/week
Diesel = $75/week
Occasional marinas/mooring = $100/week
Food (eating on boat) = $150/week
Meals, drinks, etc ashore = $250/week
Contingency = $100/week

Total = $705/week x 4.3 = $3,031/month.

I figure the above is a bit over the top, especially when making passage when the marina, mooring, ashore stuff, and contingency go away for a few days to several weeks. So weekly could come down by $450/week to about $300/week x 4.3 = $1290/month.

So, I'm expecting probably an average of around $500/week.....if its less then that would be good.

And why ex- boat costs? I think people with big boats have big budgets. Or what? ;-)

Perhaps make another one asking monthly boat costs (only)?
