Any decent jeweler can polish out scratches on synthetic sapphire bezels. Needs proper jewelers rogue (powdered industrial synthtic diamond paste) rather than the usual car cutting compound you can use on plastics and glass, but it renovates the bezel to as-new.

I'll admit to having a Seiko Automatic Divers as well.

Bezel has jammed, I don't trust the waterproofing any more and it's over 30 years old but still great otherwise. Bit heavy though.

Friend brought one at the same time as me and took it to Antarctica. His was never the same after so be warned...

Best boat watch I ever had. Built like a tank. A big advantage of a better watch is a real sapphire crystal, which is almost impossible to scratch.

If you want a great watch that you can get for about a boat unit then try the Omega Seamaster Professional.

New they sell for a little ofer $2500 but used you can get one for $1K if you're patient.

This watch and the Rolex submariner are probably the two most imitated watches in the world.

Thanks. I'm using the term "crystal" generically...I'm pretty sure this is a chunk of Lexan.

I have little to use by trying rubbing compound...even a rub with toothpaste cleans it up for a few days.

Funny: we watched the 1982 version of "The Thing" last night...set 30 years ago in Antarctica.

Nothing compared to the real deal from 1951 that I saw in a theater. In '51, I was nine. I can still recall the terror I felt. Pardon the thread drift but he started it!

I only use my watch to tell the time. I have a good watch which I bought in Geneva in 1989, and I have a GShock which I wear when sailing, swimming, painting, banging stuff with a hammer and swearing at the nut which I can't quite reach. When it gets to looking a bit scruffy, I use an old toothbrush and the Colgate to clean it. It was a present to me 5 years ago and it's a beaut.

As an aesthetically better, but not best, watch I have a Sector stainless steel watch which I bought in a second hand shop in Japan. Cost $20..never misses a beat and it's bomb proof.

I think good, rugged, reliable watches can be bought for $50-$100. But if you want one which is a chronographic version of an iPhone, you'll pay plenty.

I wonder how many people truly use the various features of a 'feaqture packed' watch and how many, like me, merely want to know the time.

BTW...My first horror film was The Blob which I saw when I was about 8 or 9 in the 50s. Frightened the crap out of me!

I'm surprised to hear that. I've only had mine for about 10 years, but my wife has one that is more than 40 years old and still going strong. Maybe they just made them better back then. But then, you did say that yours is 30 years old.

Whatever Timex or Casio are selling for under $70 that looks decent, nautical and is alleged to be waterproof. I'm just too hard on watches to spend alot, and in my experience these inexpensive ones have been accurate to better than a minute in a year.

Also, they have generally lasted at least 10 years or more. Most common reason for replacing? I lose'em. A couple are in the lake.
