Cost of Cruising - Update

Happy New Year to all":
We thought we would update our cost of cruising - we left last jan and sailed to mexico, belize, guatemala, bay isl of honduras, panama, colombia and back to panama where we currently are: well soulmates is and we are in the usa with family
for 12.5 months are costs are averaging $1,817 a month -
now that includes more dockage than we wanted as our insurance company insisted on a marina in cartagena; second one crew had some elective surgery on the hand in cartagena; third a lot of boat upgrades in cartagena including a bigger condensor for the reefer, drawers for chart storage, replacing a drippless shaft bearing and bottom job.
we do not really skimp on a lot and did a lot of sightseeing and inland trips

here is our percentage breakdown:
alcohol -------5.70
boat parts --- 2.24
boat repair--- 8.86
boat upgrade- 9.16
clothing------ 0.68
customs &imm 7.13
fuel -die&gas- 7.12
dockage ---- 12.82
eat out ----- 5.04
food -------- 7.72
language less 1.71
medical ----- 11.57
sight seeing - 1.48
transportatio - 2.94
gift --------- 1.14
hotels ------- 3.36
insurance ---- 7.38

this adds up to about 98% the rest is misc stuff
this does not yet include our trip back to the usa and our cruising guides and charts for this trip were in last years expenses - we have yet to get the charts and cruising guides for where we are headed this year

hope this helps

just our opinion

Your numbers seem very similar to many in the list I've been maintaining:

So the boat consumes about a half of the budget..
Interesting, thanks !

Re: cost of cruising - update

teddydiver - this year we anticipate the boat upgrades dropping a lot but our insurance may double if we decide to sail to the med - crossing insurance is a lot for a 2 person crew, but once in the med it drops again until we cross back -

we do maintain SoulMates in prestine condition - i am also not a great boat repair person - some stuff i can do myself but some i have to hire someone and that adds to our cost

That is extremely helpful as we plot our escape from the ice. Thank you for sharing it.

Yes, very good info to have. And encouraging. That is SO much cheaper than living here in a house. We are spending $1600 a month on groceries alone, for two people, living in the TCI. And one of us doesn't even drink. We really don't need a whole lot more encouragement to leave this land based situation and go for at least a partial year liveaboard. I can sense the day approaching.

Re: cost of cruising - update

That's great to see. We're planning our Mexico cruise, and your real life numbers match up pretty well with our anticipated costs. That makes us feel a lot better. We look forward to hearing more updates.

Re: Cost of Cruising - Update

So food cost less than $150 a month (averaged)? Wow! That's what we spend a WEEK in the keys.

It depends what choices you make. I don't buy any packaged foods and the only processed food is ham and margarine. Bake own bread (it takes 20 minutes prep time and without a bread maker), oatmeal in bulk (20 lbs), lots of fresh veggies and fruit. Meat when on sale, or moose if I got lucky. I use a lot of spices to make meals interesting.

Works for me, your mileage may differ. BTW, I live in the north country of Canada, and fresh food has to come from 2000 miles away. It works here, should be able to make it work elsewhere.

Re: Cost of Cruising - Update

your alcohol-to-boat-repair ratio seems low.
