In CA they apparently compare CG transactions to the voter, income tax and drivers license lists. If there's a match the burden is on you to explain ... which is hopeless if the boat is in the state or etc. etc. Nobody cares about the address on the bill of sale or transom.

Having taken a few shots at the issues for Lance and MI plus MN, what about Beckers, the OP here, who wasn't concerned with either of those states?

For the situation first posted, is there any reason to pick Florida as a "home" state? At least for now, Texas doesn't have a state income tax, and you do have a business in that state.

lasketella, if MI was reading to you form the same sheet I read, it doesn't have to be delivered by the broker either. It just has to be the broker's agent or delivery guy, as opposed to "your" guy.

So, the broker doesn't even have to make the trip. Buy him lunch & a nice bottle, he'll make the trip. And, if he wasn't already aware of this, he should buy YOU lunch, because you've just shown him a way to be way more competitive on total sales prices. LEGALLY.

This being the perfect example of why tax AVOIDANCE is legal, while tax EVASION isn't.
