Canucks Banking From Afar

This is directed specifically at Canadian Sailors -

We do our banking at a credit union. We have had fabulous service there - it's not a giant institution.

Any concerns with using a Credit Union while sailing abroad?
Do some people find it advisable to put money onto the credit card(s) on monthly basis and use that to make payments? (While making sure to have cash on hand in more isolated areas and for smaller businesses in Mexico (and eventually beyond).

If currently cruising - when it comes to banking/finances, what are issues that have arisen - especially the type of thing that with extra planning could have saved you some or a lot of trouble?

I'm looking into a lot of things, just curious if there's anything I might have missed. Thanks
