Canuck Taxes

Hi Everyone
Good news.
I just got off of the phone with small vessel registry office in Victoria BC Canada.
I asked if I registered an American purchased "private small vessel" as a Canadian resident when and what taxes would be due. She indicated gst/hst (12%in BC) would be collectable when vessel entered Canada through Canadian Border Services Agency (CSBA) for importation.
Note: Canadian small vessel registration proves title similar to ( I believe) US "documentation".
She was however unable to clarify what constitutes "importation".
It would be nice if you could enter Canadian waters for (2-3 months) under a cruising permit to go to Alaska or cruise the Great Lakes, St. Lawrence and Eastern Canadian sea board.
Has anybody done this?

Cruising Canada

For a Canada resident, if your boat is not "all paid taxes and duties" you cannot cruise in Canada. The only way to enter is by using a temporary permit for repairs obtained from a custom bonded shipyard. This is a frequent question here on the East side of the country since most Montrealers keep their boats inbound on the US side on Lake Champlain. There are shipyards on the Richelieu emmitting these permits for winterizing and repairs only. They cannot extend indefinitely these permits. Inspectors from custom Canada often verify that boats entered in Canada under such permits will not move out of the yards.

Custom Canada

Your best bet is to call Canada customs.
