Buying Boat to Resell: Interested in Other Opinions

Looking at possible purchasing a boat to use on flathead over the summer then end up reselling for a profit. I need experience, and flathead is really close.

Lancer 30' Reduced Price

what do you guys think? I have been talking to the owner, and it mostly seems like it needs some cleaning, and maybe have the batteries replaced, but I did talk him down to $4000.

I'd plan to use it for the summer, and possibly through next year, put a lot of hard work into to it make it all pretty, and then resell it.

Looks fine for the price , buy because you like it, buy it because you will use it , buy it because you want it. Don't bother trying to make a profit. Boats are never a good investment, but they are fun as hell.

Well the experience is mostly what I want out of it, and the enjoyment of course . But without being able to make my money back at the very least it wont make a huge amount of sense to get it. I'd be better of crewing for others in that case.

Haha, this is going to be such a weird year because of that. Maybe I'll buy it just so I can escape all the crazies

If you ever make any money on a boat you'll make it on the buy side of the equation, not the sell side.

It probably has a saildrive, which is a real negative - impact risk, parts - so I'd make sure that the engine & drive unit are in top shape & still grind the price on that issue. As for whether you'll make your money back, or not, who knows where the PNW market will go.

Re: Buying Boat to Resell: Interested in Other Opinions

Ok forget about making money on it. You can make a profit on anything if you buy far under market value, has no huge problems with main functions that will require a large money sink, willing to spend large amount of time working on it to restore esthetic of the item, and there are no reoccurring fees that you need to worry about in owning the item, in this case a slip which I have one on flathead I can use for free. Also being in no hurry to sell once you decide to is a huge part of that.

So I dont really want to discuss that, all I'm really interested in is this a good deal for what this boat usually goes for in top condition? I see these boats listed other places in the 15k-25k even for ones older than this particular one.

How wold you get the boat from CDA to Flathead. I don't know the boat well enough to know if it is a trailerable boat that can be pulled with a pick up or not. What about a trailer? Does it come with one or not. I think that these are all numbrs that need to be thrown into your calculations. As I remember boats in Montana fetch a premium but I have also heard that the economy is pretty slow. I am sure that it is worth more then $4k if you could find the right buyer.

The bottom has pretty well fallen out of the used boat market.

I have a relative that used to be a huge sailor and still has a boat trailer that will work for this size of boat, so thats not really an issue. Yeah the economy is really slow here.

Re: Buying Boat to Resell: Interested in Other Opinions

If you buy it for $4k. you won't lose much. Probably no more than $4k. plus running expenses.

For me the big clue on re-sale would be no takers at $8k. and few (only you?) at $6K. Of course relocating a boat can impact on the resale - both ways.

Not familiar with that boat model. But looks like another faceless cheap and cheerful boat from the 1970's. Nothing wrong with that - but just always going to be selling on price, cheap enough to overcome it being what it is.

But if you want a boat for a year or 2. then as long as it floats (and the engine starts) and everything is there (even if wanked out) - then I would go for it. If you make a profit then all well and good. Just don't expect to. especially once you factor in bits and pieces........the risk is that end up with a very nice $2k boat.
