| Buying Boat Documented in Canada
I am considering buying an IP31 located in the US, but documented in Canada. Besides paying for US documentation and state taxes, what other fees are involved? Also, what is the process required to do the conversion? Thanks for any help you can provide. Julio Robbinsville, NJ USA |

We bought our boat in Ft Lauderdale. The boat was documented in Canada. Our agent handled most of the logistics and the selling broker should have most of the answers for you. If I remember correctly there is a customs fee of some sorts, along with fee to remove documentation from Canada.

I also bought a Canadian registered vessel. Other than the normal paperwork I had to complete 2 additional steps. The first was to "import" the boat into the USA and pay duty on it. My boat had been in Florida for years as a foreign vessel, and this still had to be done. I believe I paid 2% duty in 2005. The other step was to send the Canadian government a request to 'undocument' the boat. My broker assisted with these tasks. Both these steps were necessary for Florida registration. |

I too bought a Canadian registered vessel but did NOT have to pay duty of any sort. Boat was US built so that may have been the difference. The finance company handled the documentation through a broker. No problems at all. Purchase was in LA but the boat was registered in TX and of course USCG documented.
