Diving with anything less than a 8-15 bring a good book to read for the trip!

Not going to pimp out my catalina 30 with davits and crane when I already want a different boat. Don't really wanna put almost 100 lb on my Stern rails either. I might just be supper slow unless I find a good 2 stroke used.

The 8hp 2 stroke weighs in at about 60# and the 9.9 at about 80#. I priced a 15 at Minns Water Sports in Georgetown two years ago and it was $2300 which was about as much as a 4 stroke in the US. I was having a problem with my 2002 Yamaha 4 stroke at the time and found that you couldn't get parts for 4 strokes less than 60 HP in the Bahamas but had to have them shipped in from the states, conversely getting parts for two strokes in the US is pretty much impossible, just something to consider.

With thousands ( maybe more) 2 strokes still in use in the States do you think parts impossible to get?

15hp 2 stroke. Same weight as the 10, you will be able to plane to go adventuring with 4 people.

It depends on how much the individual model has changed since they were last imported into the states. A model identical to one that was here then probably not much of a problem, on a new model never sold in the states, probably a real problem.

I have a British Seagull 2 stroke that I can do one-arm curls with. No longer manufactured but new parts are made in England. Available in USA on Ebay, Craigslist, etc.

For comparison sake, my 6 hp Evinrude short shaft weighs 56 lbs. The 8 hp version weighs the same, (just different tuning for the additional 2 hp).

The little Honda can experience clutch problems I believe - more so than many other similar motors.
The people I know with a Yam 8hp two Stoke simply love them and I can't say I've noticed any 'loudness' from them.
The 9.9hp & the 15hp (2S) are the same basic engine - not the 8hp. Check the online brochures and check the cubic capacity and weights of the engines.

Re: Buy dingy motor in bahamas

There is probably no outboard motor in existence that has such a love-hate relationship with owners as the Seagull!

They have a striking resemblance to a 1917 Evinrude. Really!

I switched from a (59 pound) 9.8 Nissan/Tohatsu 2-stroke to a (30 pound) Suzuki 2.5 4-stroke, and I have a motor lift crane. Still easier, and worth the compromise (for us).

Pros of small 4-stroke engine:
  • Easy to handle --- even one-handed
  • Uses less fuel
  • Quieter at idle
  • Easy to handle --- even one-handed

Cons of small 4-stroke engine:
  1. Can't plane (but we wouldn't plane anyway in crowded harbors or choppy water)
  2. No reverse gear (just forward-neutral and 360-degree steering)
  3. No shallow water drive position (I carry a 12" 2x2" piece of wood to insert between the drive leg and mounting yoke. That tips up the engine slightly as needed. Added a string so we don't lose it.)
  4. (2 and 3 above are kind of "rinky-dink" but we can live with it.)
  5. Vibrates more
  6. Louder at cruising speeds
  7. Less fuel capacity (we bring a very small fuel container to avoid range anxiety. A quart is enough, would last a few hours.)
I still own the 9.8 and it's a great engine. However, I've been using the Suzuki 2.5 for 3 summers now and plan to continue. Did I mention easy to handle --- even one-handed?

I'd use the 9.8 if we had davits and didn't need to mount/dismount the engine whenever we arrive and depart a harbor. But the ease of handling makes the rest worthwhile.

The only other "con" I'd mention is that if you don't use it frequently, the smaller carb jets in a small 4-stroke make them more fussy with stale/bad gasoline. I sometimes leave the dinghy engine for weeks or months, and had some issues in the past from ethanol phase-separation. for that reason I use TruFuel as a general rule... Since doing that I've not had a problem from bad gas.
