Boat Insurance

Well...as long as we're talking insurance, why not.

Currently carried by BoatUS in NJ. Planning on heading South in the fall, probably SE Florida. Well, my BoatUS policy, I think almost triples once I hit Jacksonville. So once again looking for suggestions.

Other cheaper carriers?
Who provides coverage for Mexico (is a chance I'll head to Tolum or Coz)?
If I just do Florida, maybe staying with BoatUS is my best bet (although it's going to go up, it will be for just part of the year, so may be better than jumping from carrier to carrier)?

PS - Considering this topic constantly comes up, has anyone thought about maybe posting a link that just list a bunch of carriers, with coverage areas, and average rates based on coverage, area, and boat size/age?

I don't know if you can do much better than Boat US for domestic-only coverage, but I have been using IMIS insurance (based in Florida) for my offshore/ international coverage. I currently have their "Jackline" policy.
Happy with IMIS as a company, and the jackline policy for the rates and broad coverage parameters (double-handing on long passages, etc).
Not associated with either, just a satisfied customer.

We have insurance with Commandeur for a policy covering the US East coast and entire Caribbean sea. The cost of the policy is very good, as is the coverage. Their website gives instant quotes so you can easily compare options.

We just got a huge surprise when we went to renew our policy. They are a Dutch company and the currency they use is the Euro, which has dropped 20% against the US dollar in the past year. Our renewal policy dropped 20% in cost!!!

Needless to say, that made us happy.

I don't know if this is breaking rules (but I'm sure I will find out if it is...):

Commandeur verzekeringen | Yachtinsurance | Yacht Insurance | Ease of mind with excellent conditions

Also, search this board for references to them in past threads.

As to Mexico, the insurance comes from a Mexican company but can be arranged through your BoatUS agent and I am sure other marine insurance brokers/agents have the same service.

Yeah looks like BoatUS may be able to do part of the Carib too.

Grunzster & Ralphekluge,
Just drop me an e-mail. There are only a limited number of A-rated companies that truly offer worldwide coverage. We represent most of them. Some US companies will dip into the Caribbean for the non-hurricane season, but require you to head back to the USA in June. Sure we could post a link to all the individual companies and you could spend all day tying in your information, but that's what you should have an experienced insurance agent for. The policy doesn't cost you any more when you purchase it though us, and we read the fine print and advise you of the differences in coverages.

Best Regards,
Susan
