Beware! Ripoff Artists Contacting Members Who Post Email Addresses in Classifieds!

To anyone selling items in the classified section, be on the lookout for someone contacting you (with very poor English) in regard to buying your item. They will not be Forum members and will use your email address (if you put it in the ad) to contact you. The scheme involves a supposed client of theirs that wants your item, blah, blah, blah. It will always end in a request that you send money to them, in exchange for a larger check back. The scary thing is that some people have actually fallen for similar schemes in the past. The person who contacted me was Chember Lozel <chemberlozels@yahoo.com>

Any sort of offer with an atypical method of payment is probably a scam.

Sounds like the typical Nigerian scam... Every time my tenants move out of my rental property, I get to deal with these crooks - I have even contacted the FBI while I was in contact with these folks and the FBI wasn't even interested in identifying/pursuing them. Hate to think of folks becoming their victims.

Thanks for sharing!

It is a symptom of the world in which we live. And some are not even from Nigeria.

So true!.. I - based on my personal experience - inadvertently pointed my finger toward the Nigerians; I should not have generalized as such... It is all over indeed.

This is one of the oldest schemes around the net. They target any open selling forum. I used to have a collection of bogus check they've sent to me. FBI isn't interested. I tried that with the first time I ran into it. They have bigger fish to fry.

I play the game, get the check and then call them a lot of real bad things including the bad english. Makes me feel better!

Barbara Ann, Saildrive, I would not be so politically correct in your concern about singling out Nigerians. They ACCUALLY have high school classes that teach this con there. It is an accepted pass time and there a respectable way to make a living. I understand some of the more successful ones are looked on as rockstars.

They do it from internet cafes so the url cannot be traced, and those operations abound. This came straight from 60 minutes.

I get hit with about 3-4 a day, most are phishing type emails where they tell me my account has problems, please go to this (official looking) site and log in. If you do, a couple hours later your account will be drained. When I was listing Espina for sale I was getting about 30 a week, some even from the same writer, using different addresses.

If you go into your email client and look at tools or account, sometimes if you right click on the email itself you can bring up all the hidden headers. Then I just forward the whole deal to abuse@XXXX.com and tell them to delete the account for fraudulent use. Other posters have the right of it, FBI, RCMP etc don't want to know. No resources for this sort of stuff. As long as there are internet based email addresses available for free, we will be getting stuck with this garbage. I used a filter for the boat sale stuff, and dumped any email with the words boat for sale and using a Gmail, Hotmail account straight to trash.

Of course you can have fun with these mooks if that be your cup of tea. String them along. Send them official looking bank info and other stuff.

Pretty funny!.. It had me going all the way until the very last line

Mule, you are probably correct about not singling out the Nigerians but I have a couple of Nigerian friends I have worked with in the past and they are the ones who I thought of and felt self concious about my accusation

Thanks very much for the link to the Nigerian business course. I've sent my $995 for attendance and am looking forward to my complimentary copy of 'Make More Money Than You Ever Drimmed Of Before And Sailing At The Same Time'.

Barbara, et. al.,

I had posted a prop for sale on this forum recently and got an email from the same address Barbara mentions. They wanted to pay me $2000 extra since the check was made for another deal that fell through and blah, blah. I have seem those before. They mentioned the ad to sell my 'property' on cruisers forum...:-)

I also know of some people who fell for this. These scams started around 2000 and then sort of died away I think and are starting up again...

Any deal that sound sto good to be true, usually is!
