Re: Best place to buy in the Caribbean?

The import duty on boats is 1.5% so I wouldn't restrict your search to US flagged boats. I also believe that you can do it yourself without hiring a broker.

Re: Best place to buy in the Caribbean?

Thanks for the lead msponer!

Carl, you're right, 1.5% on 10k is $150. Sometimes I get hung up in the trees and forget to see the forest. Now I can cast a wider net!

Re: Best place to buy in the Caribbean?

Also, don't assume you have to go shopping in the Carib. The biggest glut of under valued boats is probably in the USA.

Re: Best place to buy in the Caribbean?

There is a Dufour for sale in St. Martin, a cute little red one for $19,999 or something like that. Had a noisy little Volvo one cylinder in it but it seems to run okay. You could do worse. Its on yachtworld.

I met Tony Brewer in St. Martin, he seemed to be knowledgable and businesslike and has been there a whule.

Re: Best place to buy in the Caribbean?

There's a Hunter 34 in Coral Bay, USVI that's very reasonable. US boat, pretty well equipped. May have a new engine. PM for contact info.

Ron

Re: Best place to buy in the Caribbean?

I have that one on my radar, as well as this one: 1982 hunter 34 ft sailboat and dinghy

Two cheap Hunters in one place, it's fantastic! Unfortunately, I can't get out there yet; still got to finish up some work requirements. Soon though, very soon.

Re: Best place to buy in the Caribbean?

That last one you mention seems like a great deal. It's good to know boats like that exist.

That 1982 looks like a Cherbunini 33, not a 34, which he did not design. If so, that is one heck of a platform to start from, pending survey.

It looks like it will need some TLC, but if the bones are as good as most Cherubinins, one could do a lot worse.

Re: Best place to buy in the Caribbean?

I think you're right: it lacks the aft cabin door seen in the 34s and its stern looks narrower. That would be a good find!

Re: Best place to buy in the Caribbean?

check out "clasificados online" in Puerto Rico under boats-sailboats.

It's US and easy and cheap to get to.

Wish you luck!
