Re: Bahamas- Credit Cards and ATMs

Found ATM's "closed" in Bimini recently. On a Fri nite, so no service until Monday.

Also, not just in Bahamas, if you are doing a wire xfer, the fees can be exorbitant. Make a 'deal' with the bank BEFORE you transfer ... I've even had them waive the fees on $10K - 50K transfers. Saved hundreds of dollars per transfer. Don't expect foreign banks to charge $30 like you often see in the states!

In The Bahamas it's not uncommon for there to be an outage (power or networks) for up to a couple days or more. Not only will ATMs not work, but they won't be able to do CC transactions either. Good idea to have enough cash on hand to carry you through a few days.

PS. Found the BOB (Bank of Bahamas) ATMs didn't charge a fee and didn't limit the size of withdrawal - the Canadian banks all slap a $3 or $4 (plus VAT) charge on each withdrawal, on top of whatever fee your bank at home charges and cap the amount you can take out at a time. Foreign cards don't work in Commonwealth Bank machines.
