Same with most canned fruit and veges yes the weight is the same but the water content is much higher. EG Shake a tin of homebrand peaches and the sound you hear is water do the same with SPC and there is no noise because the fruit is packed in tight yet weight is same etc etc.......

Re: 2012 Cost of living indicator for liveaboards.

Even milk can be very diffferent dependent on what has been done. For example, milk from a jersey cow is much creeamier, but the cow produces less yield. Other cows produce much more quantity, but less cream. Some milk may have had some of the cream skimmed, but not enough to deserve a label as semi-skimmed.

And that is just one product.

Thus the most difficult problem is ensuring that like is being compared to like.

Furthermore, I travel around quite a lot, what is cheap in one country can easily be expensive in another (and vice versa) despite the global economy. This is more a question of supply and demand, but it makes a comparison of cost of living very difficult.

For example, canned goods in polynesia need to be imported, whilst most fresh is local supplied, thus the ratio between tinned and fresh in poynesia will be significantly different to a western country.

In short — especially when it comes to milk, eggs, bread and cheese — not that much. Many generics are made in the same factory as branded products by the same companies. Sometimes they are even the same recipe.

But yes, it was not mentioned in the original list
But neither was tinned fruit

In the main , the comparison isnt going to produce much useful data ( ps I would replace seafood, which is often expensive with the original ground beef). The trouble is you learn what cheap and good and thats what you buy, often this varies from country to country.

I would keep beef, chicken, pork and fish.

It is going to become obvious that these proteins vary greatly in price. Your diet may have to change based on local.

Seafood is plentiful and cheap in Asia for example, as is chicken and pork. Beef seems to be a US, Latin America thing.

OTOH - the survey could get a bit cumbersome and ridiculous. I personally would replace bread with lentils, rice or even flour. You don't provision fresh loaves of bread as it won't last...

Re: 2012 Cost of living indicator for liveaboards.

Hi,
Current prices Toronto, Canada

4 Litres Diesel fuel. (1.056 US gallons) = $4.55 cdn
4 Litres petrol. = $4.72 cdn (On average fuel in marinas goes for a 10-15% more than quoted.)
4 Litres milk. = $3.97cdn
1 Kg fish/seafood, basic. (2.2lb) = $20.00 cdn
700gram Loaf bread (1.5lb) = $2.35 cdn
1 Medium uncooked dressed chicken. = $9.75 cdn
12 Eggs. = $3.00 cdn

Consider the Canadian dollar par with the greenback plus or minus 5%.

Re: 2012 Cost of living indicator for liveaboards.

4 Litres Diesel fuel. (1.056 US gallons) = $3.44 US
4 Litres petrol. = $2.89
4 Litres milk. = $2.89
1 Kg fish/seafood, basic. (2.2lb) = $7.07/lb Tilapia, shrimp is $8.99/lb
700gram Loaf bread (1.5lb) = $1.83
1 Medium uncooked dressed chicken. = $6.08
12 Eggs. = $1.18

$25.34 Kansas City, Missouri, prices in Tallahassee, Florida a slightly higher, but not much different.

FWIW - I was in New York last week, the prices there seemed to be about 20 - 30% higher than in Missouri.

I do see a correlation between gas and milk prices..

$48.16, then there is the issue of taxation here in Ontario. The gas prices are taxes in, the food prices are plus 13% HST. Are yours plus HST or is the tax included?

We call it GST (Goods and services) i believe it's illegal here in Australia to not include it at the first instance. Cheers Frank

it's more an indication of sitting in say Belize going to the local market, we bake our own bread, we use UHT Milk when at sea but that's totally different because it's an indicator of the destination's cost of living ie the local shops!!!!! Cheers

Yes our gas prices are advertised taxes included. We also had the Goods and Services tax GST but then there was also a PST (provincial sales tax) so in the last few years they combined the two into a HST, harmonized sales tax. Now British Comumbia had a referendum to repeal the HST and will be doing so. The problem with the HST is that not all items qualified for both taxes, like new homes for instance were GST taxable but not PST. For such a large purchase this was a big hit for that industry.
