What other books are comparable to this one?

Is this what most use?

We also use "Ocean Passages and Landfalls" which has the routes in less details, chartlets of major entry ports and plans on how to sail around the world in 18 months!

I always wondered how that book became popular - it is almost identical to Ocean passages produced by the British Admiralty, which has been around for years and at the time was way cheaper, good marketing I guess.

I made my share of course mistakes, and Jimmy knows better than me, but at least I went me way, not in the wake of Aventura.



I wonder if Laura Dekker would have beaten Jimmy accross the Atlanctic, too?

I have both and I don't agree. I have the 1950 edition of OP which is still largely oriented towards the sailing routes and it gives the info in such a way as to enable one to make up one's own mind about the routes/dates etc. I feel one augments the other although a pilot of the area in question is still necessary imo.

To answer EoftR, if you can only get one then Cornell's is probably of more use. But peruse pilot books too.


fwiw the 1950 ed of OP comes with some rather lovely large charts of winds, currents and routes of the globe. I'm presently looking to get them copied to put on my wall.

Ocean Passages for the World (OP) is published by the British admiralty - that's what I was referring to

I think OP&LF is by Rod Heikell and AFAICR is Cornell's book mixed with some cruising guides? But I don't know the book, so can't comment. I think I saw it in a book shop recently, new ed and faaaaaar less than 185 clams.

I have both books and find them complementary. Given the wonkiness of the weather and "unseasonability", OP will have to put out a new edition sooner than later as the statistics continue to skew. However, for now, it and Cornell's books and a big map of the world backed with cork are excellent at-home planning devices.

I have downloaded the entirety of the U.S. Pilot Charts as well. Very handy.

??? how do you mean?

the arctic oscillation is -ve and it's a la nina year, so it's gonna be cold and crops yields may be poor. The trade winds have been there for centuries, I'm sure they'll be there for several more.

Like I said above, I find Cornell's book and OP (1950) augment one another: OP has very nice wind and current charts.

between jimmy on avontura and mike on pangolin they have almost single handedly destroyed the world of cruising that we used to enjoy before it became available to any body who couldn't use a sextant .

as a commercial interest they have benifited enourmously .
their destinations not so well,but that is by the buy,since they sold the arc to another self promoter,could go on and mention other names buttttt

I'm sure as well. But pilot books in general are predicated on trends established in the long past, as in 200 years in some cases of near-continuous weather records. Averaged out, we get our compass roses of winds and windspeeds in each 5 x 5 degree chunk of ocean.

Weather is getting more variable, or so I read, with dry when it's supposed to be rainy, calm when wind is the norm, and so on. So this is going to be noticed long before it has enough of an effect to justify changing the pilot charts for each month of the year.

Hell, don't believe me. Believe a guy who's raced three times in the Southern Ocean and says it's gotten worse each time:
