Weather Prediction Books

In the book "Sea Change", the author talks about using a book that he references for weather prediction by identifying clouds. Are there any books out there that you guys keep on hand for this purpose?

Re: Weather Prediction Books?

I got this for free at a book swap. Very good for USA and Caribbean. But its old now so needs an update to keep in with the internet. But if you see it at a library or a swap grab it.

Weather for the Mariner [Hardcover]

If the sky looks scratched by a hen, time to drop your sails then... That's all I got.

learning by experience as well as reading the old time weather in the newspapers--with isobars and such is a help. learn to read the seas and skies. associate the readings you find with changes you feel. go from there. than read book. will be more easily assimilated.

I thought this was about the best book for understanding weather that I have seen - and the Navy apparently thought so too 'cuz in the first edition he was a Captain and in the second he was a Rear Admiral.

If you DO find a really good weather prediction book please forward it to every meterologist on the planet.

I think, actually, that they do a pretty good job.
Its difficult to tell if a bit of cloud is suddenly going to convect and turn into a thunderstorm on a summers day, and if Satruday afternoon is going to be 15 knots or 20 knots.
But in a more strategic basis the Western World is pretty well on the money.

The Atlanitc and the Med seem to have been studied so heavily and over such a long period they are getting the hang of it.

Cruising long distance or in Asia/Indian ocean etc youse gets what youse gets

Re: Weather Prediction Books ?

There is a cloud pattern book that is mentioned as authoritative and simple to use in several sources written in the 60s and 70s... I think the Pardeys refered to it... I'm away from my little library and all I can remember is the authors' name, Alan Watts (don't think it's the famous Brit Buddist, though I've never checked... studying clouds and Buddism... hmmm).
A book I've enjoyed is The Cloudspotters Guide

A book I've enjoyed is The Cloudspotters Guide
The Way of Ze (n Clouds)
The Meaning of Happi (ness Clouds)
The Supreme Identity (of Clouds)

The clouds you can describe are not the clouds that are...

Re: Weather Prediction Books ?

Location, location, location

The Wind Came All Ways (amazon) is my favourite treatise on wind throughout the Salish Sea (although a bit more specific to Georgia Strait than southern Puget Sound.) Different locations may have texts specialised to just that region. You may want to call your local met office and ask if anyone in the office is a sailor; no, really, this often works! It's amazing how many meteorologists are also sailors/boaters. They can advise you on finding a good textbook for your area.
