If it was legal he would not have been jailed for 42 days and plead no contest.

I dont think anyone is explaining it away. I dont call out people with such a serious charge without knowing some truth. In this case we don't know what happened. It does seem that he was having some issues later in life but either way the book is a good read.

The book is an excellent read... I'm merely pointing out that if he was a contemporary sailor he would be treated as a sex offender and fall under the restrictions of Megan's Law, as I said initially.

I don't know what your point is though. Its just not appropriate to transfer the laws of one era to another. Further this is an international forum and a great percentage of the readers don't give a tinkers cuss about the particular laws in your individual country.

If it was, in some ratbag country in the present he would have been made a hero and she would have been stoned to death.

To be perfectly cleared he was in jail waiting trial, as in not yet found guilty. The eventual charge was indecent exposure. He pleaded no contest because he had no memory of the event. It occured at a stage of his life when he was apparently beginning to lose his faculties.

It amazes me how someone will jump to a conclusion based, not on the facts, but on their own conjecture.

G'Day all,

Ol' Josh was a consumate seaman and told a great story, but he was out for a buck in many of the same ways that our current crop of media sailors are... just timewarped back a while. For a really different look at him and his life, read the biography written by his daughter. I posted the reference a few months ago, but don'thave it to hand right now, but Google will find it if you are interested. I found it fascinating!
