Latitude42 - she's a beauty! The smaller the boat, the bigger the adventure... I have a 44' steel pilothouse cutter, but spent years building my Microship (amphibian pedal/solar/sail micro-trimaran) and even now sometimes get more of a raw kick out of sailing the dinghy.

You're right on the glossies... boatporn builds false impressions of what's necessary and normal.

I subscribe to SAIL and enjoy it, but I agree the actual content is pretty thin.

Still, take a look at the December cover: That's my boat!

The shot is of us heading out under the Golden Gate Bridge for an offshore overnight shakedown a few weeks before we sailed in the Pacific Cup to Hawaii. As we were approaching the bridge, a photographer zoomed up in his RIB and asked if he could take some shots. Of course we said yes, and a few months later he emails me to tell me that we are going to be on the December cover.

I cancelled the subscriptions, built a SMALL boat and went sailing.
You forgot the 27 sailing schools and 300 charters you need to get experienced. Add another quarter million.

I get Sail and my brother gets Good Old Boat. I just visited him and like GoB a lot better.

Funny thing is that I let my subscription to Sail lapse over three years ago and they still keep sending it to me.

I ordered a two year subscription to 'Cruising World" and ended up with a free seven year subscription! And the best part is I don't even read the damn thing anymore!!! I can't get out of this rut!!!

I recive it and i find it as good as any magazine you read it look at the pictures and put it down not sure what else you would do with one. most likely not going to sail the world on one and if i wanted to read a directions book id buy that instead.

I love the stories on how I just MUST charter one of the new Mega-Boat 565 dual station sailing behemoths in the South Pacific -- preferably with a full time captain and guide to experience it all.

What these guys spend on one charter would cover my maintenance of 3 years....maybe more...
