Recall Notices Website

NMMA helping put product recalls on the Web.

The National Marine Manufacturers Association is partnering with the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission to launch a new Web site devoted exclusively to product recalls.

The Web site, www.recalls.gov , is live today - click on Boats. The site links visitors to the home pages of government regulatory agencies responsible for recalls. People also can sign up for e-mail alerts on recalls.

NMMA says the new site is an “unprecedented collaborative effort” of CPSC and four other federal regulatory agencies — the U.S. Coast Guard, Environmental Protection Agency, National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, and Food and Drug Administration.

“The recreational boating industry takes recalls very seriously and wants its customers to feel safe and educated about boats and boating products,” Monita W. Fontaine, NMMA vice president of government relations, said in a statement

NMMA’s Discover Boating Web site, www.discoverboating.com , provides a direct link to www.recalls.gov to help boaters obtain recall information posted by the Coast Guard. Users should click on the Boating Safety link and then scroll down to the bottom of the page.

Not so great

The recall website is a great idea, though it's been available for years, just not in the same place. NMMA is an association whose goal is to help members sell more boats, period. No atruism sparked their rush help the USCG post recalls from their members.

The only way a recall can be done is if a manufacturer fails to follow a USCG regulation and gets caught (or sometimes notifies the CG in order to lessen liability) with a dangerous product. Failing to follow dozens of ABYC standards which deal with many times more safety issues has no penalty.

It bothers me to see self-serving promotion from an association like that when it appears they have the consumer's best interest in mind.
