I declare this boat related as I'm taking my SF collection to the boat - or at least part of it

I will be interested to hear about some modern sci-fi books, good ones are hard to find! Right now I am feeding my sci-fi hunger with mostly sci-fi movies.

There have been so much good si-fi and fantasy stuff on TV over the last decade or so that I have been disappointed almost every time I've tried to read a book.

And books are so expensive now, not to mention library fines when I don't get round to reading what I've borrowed.

My plan is to get as much as I can on disk or even PVR, and try to bring it with me.

Recently I've watched Torchwood, Dr. Who, Stargate Atlantis. Even Being Erica almost qualifies.

Amazon sells used books for pretty cheap. With free shipping and no sales tax, its hard to beat when you want actual paper to read from. I was considering a Kindle lately, but its still hard to justify the price. If something like a Kindle were a hundred bucks, then yeah, I would get one.

Arthur C Clarke is one of my all time favorites. Not really the golden age, but good stuff.

Well, I think our boat name tells the story. We have all episodes from I think every sci-fi series on DVD. Currently watching the last Star Trek seasons. Don't forget Battlestar Gallactica, Babylon 5 etc. Yes, we have every Stargate SG1 and Atlantis too... that's over a hundred DVD's ;-)

My favorite book is Dune.

I find when I look for science fiction in the bookstores now, you seem to have two choices- Star Wars or Star Trek. Too bad, because there's so much more.
I like David Drake although that's a bit of a cross between science fiction & military fiction. Robert J. Sawyer is good too, near-future SF.

Which why I asked about fans of the Golden Age. All I have seen for years seems to be fantasy - are there any new 'hard science' writers I should be reading?
