NTOTD: Stock

Noun:
  1. A bar for the capstan.
  2. The bar which passes through the shank or across the crown of an anchor, and is at right angles to the arms. In fluke-type anchors the flukes are usually attached to the stock.
The stock attempts to insure the penetrating element of the anchor addresses the bottom, by righting or turning the anchor as pull is exerted up on it. Not all anchor designs include a stock.

There is also the rudder stock as well. A structural member that passes through the rudder and into the boat. Steering mechanisms such as quadrants (if used) would attach. An emergency tiller would attach to the top of the rudder stock if one were provided.

"Stock" is also a (slightly derogatory) local Hobart term for attractive females.

The verb stock is used in stocking the liquor locker or any other food or beverage area but mostly for the liquor locker on my boat.

More terms!

I have just under 600 nautical terms so far entered into the wiki... I've been working mostly on transcribing Ocean Passages of the World routes lately; I probably have 800 more of those to do ::sigh:: But slowly and surely I'm working to put together a useful tool for myself and other cruisers.
