Re: Non-Fiction Sailing Books
The Venturesome Voyages of Captain Voss by Captain John Voss a Canadian who sailed almost right around the world in a 3 masted dugout canoe beginning in 1901.
I first read this book about 30 years ago, then read it several more times since... an incredible voyage by a true adventurer.
There are copies on Amazon, but its also available as a free download on the internet.

Re: Non-Fiction Sailing Books
I guess I don't mind sort of hijacking a 7 year old thread but if anyone is interested, I have listed a fair number of books and magazines in the classified forum, including classic adventure tales by Moitessier, Peter Nichols, Eric Hiscock, and more--great reads and tons of information!

Re: Non-Fiction Sailing Books
I JUST got done reading " One Wave at a Time" by Ed Atkin and Bernie Houston.
I couldn't put it down.
The book is a narrative of a 20 year around the world sailing adventure that took place between 1977 and 1997.
I picked it up on Amazon for around $8.

Re: Non-Fiction Sailing Books
I don't read the circumavigation sagas any more for various reasons but would make an exception for Les Powles and his Solitaire Spirit. He can write entertainingly and his three circumnavigations don't seem to get the recognition they deserve. I think it was on the third none stop one that provisions ran short, off Cape Horn perhaps, and he sailed back to England on an ebb cup of rice flavoured with tooth paste a couple of times a day. And unlike Tristan Jones it wasn't made up. He was about 7 stone when he got back. A Lymington marina awarded him free berthing for life.

Re: Non-Fiction Sailing Books
A YEAR IN A YAWL by Russell Doubleday
FREE! This was recently put on Project Gutenberg.
The true story of four boys doing the great loop on a home built 30 foot yawl, in 1898, with no engine!
The sail began on October 27 from Lake Michigan, and the boys had a close call with the ice flows in the Mississippi with this late start! Lots of close calls followed, including running onto rocks in the shadow of the statue of liberty!
As I read the book, I checked their course on my nav app, and found the trip was very accurate, even today! Great adventure!

Re: Non-Fiction Sailing Books
Maiden Voyage by Tania Aebi was pretty good.
She had one hell of a time on her first leg from New York to the Bahamas which also served as her shaledown cruise for her new untested Contessa 26
She didn't even know how to navigate yet and was only 18 years old

Re: Non-Fiction Sailing Books
This is not a sailing book, but some of you may be interested in rowing, too:
On the Water by Nat Stone
It's about him rowing a 17 foot scull around a route similar to the Great Loop.
