Right now I am reading Lord Jim, Castaway, and Simple Courage.

The book Endurance, about Ernest Shackleton, changed my life. There are tons of good sailing adventure books out there.

Apart from the Pardeys, I love Ice Blink, by Dave and Jaja Martin. Its a fantastic account of their voyage to Iceland and Norway. I also really like Beth Leonard's books- especially 'Following Seas', which recounted the learning curve after they first set off on their voyage. Its always comforting to hear and learn about other peoples mistakes!!

I'll put in a plug for "The Next Port", by Heyward Coleman. Very well written description of modern cruising, and required if you dream of sailing round the world but your partner doesn't share the dream. Available at Amazon or heywardcoleman.com

My all time favorite compendium of sailing stories is called The Circumnavigators by Donald R. Holm. It was recently uploaded to the web in its entirety for everyone's enjoyment. This book kept my sailing dreams alive for many landlocked years.

I have read countless books and many journals of trips and great adventures, but Chasing Sunsets is my favorite. It's a story of a six-and-a-half year, 56 country, 40,000 mile circumnavigation from three perspectives is amusing, engrossing, uplifting, entertaining, informative and a book that is hard to put down.

I love the story of tinkerbell by Robert Manry.

The book I have found most informative on nearly all subjects is "Plot your Course to Adventure. How to be a successful Cruiser." You can check out the website at the same name as the book. www.plotyourcoursetoadventure.com

All of the following are long out of print, but very good and by doing a search you can find copies.

“The Venturesome voyages of Captain Voss”. Well written and ranks up there with “Sailing Alone around the World”, Joshua Slocum. Only Voss did a lot more interesting things!

A VERY good book, but hard to find is "Stars to Windward". It tell an amazing story about Bruce and Sheridan Fahnestock's journey through the South Pacific before and during World War II. Their notes, photographs, and the recordings they made of native drum and gong music preserved as "Music For The Gods: The Fahnestock South Sea Expedition, Indonesia," are in the Library of Congress.

Also, a great story told from another perspective is “I ran away to sea at fifty” by Mary Sheridan, Bruce and Sheridan's mother!

Mary's own story is wonderfully and humorously written.

To find one of these books you need to do a search of used book stores or libraries. They are great books!

And I guess I need to point out that the Fahnestocks were relatives (very distant) of mine.
