Stirling Hayden (the 1950's movie star) wrote two books. One is an autobiography, "Wanderer", and the other is a novel. I forget the title.
I would also recommend William McFee. He wrote many novels based on his life as a marine engineer. They are not exactly sailing adventures but are good stories of actual life at sea.

A good read for fiction is A Voyage Toward Vengeance by Jule Miller. As long as there is greed and lust in the sea, there will be piracy!Arrgh

"Reaching Port: A Montana Couple Sails Around the World" - Keith Jones
If you can find this book somewhere, by all means get it. It was one of the funniest, most inspiring books that a wannabe cruiser could ever read. On their way for a 'round the world cruise, they lose their boat almost right out of the gate. This would have stopped a lot of people. Instead, this couple dragged their Yamaha trail bikes out of the wreck, rode them across the Baja desert and started all over again. The dialogue between the "MCP" author and his long-suffering wife is so hilarious it still makes me smile after all these years. If you're going cruising you need a sense of humor. If you read this and don't find it funny, reconsider.
+1 for Trekka, An Island to Oneself, Wanderer & Riddle of the Sands (all great)

Suggestion
I have carefully read all 8 pages of this 3D, I saw the titles of many books I read, however, lacks a title of a book that partly covered the America, his name is Kodoku.
And 'the story of a young Japanese "Kenichi Horie" at the age of 23 years, starting with "Nischinomiya" in the bay of "Osaka" on a small boat only 18 feet in 94 days across the Pacific Ocean and lands San Francisco .... 5000 nm with a boat of marine plywood.
A beautiful story that tells the simplicity of this young lover of the sea and the sailing .... read.
P.S. Excuse my English, I will improve with time
Bob.

One of the first books about sailing I ever read was "Princess" by Joe Richards, a sailor and artist. For all intents and purposes I have had a copy for over 55 years--one is still om my nightstand.
See Joe Richards Princess, Friendship Sloops, Nautical Art St Petersburg Florida
Great book...
Another good read is " My Lively Lady" by Sir. Alec Rose. A tale of Rose's single handed circumnavigation in the early 60's. Many though he was in competition with Gypsey Moth IV but that was not really so. Copies are hard to come by but some are available used, on-line.
FWIW...

We stumbled across a real gem in a box of used sailing books this summer called The Tuntsa.
Amazon.com: The Tuntsa: Teppo Turen, Elizabeth Maddox McCabe: Books
9 people with very little sailing experience flee Finland on a 30 foot wooden ketch shortly after world war 2. Great true story, amazing characters.

Conrad's "Typhoon" is a classic. Serge Testa's "500 Days", wherein, he sails around the world on a 12 foot "yacht".

For a nice little adventurous short read I really enjoyed Conrad's "Youth".
Herman Melville also writes very well.

There is a really great book on the left. It's an action/adventure novel that takes place along the west coast of Florida on a really cool boat.

Re: Looking for Sailing Adventure Books
Go the ManyBooks.net - Ad-free eBooks for your iPad, smartphone, or eBook reader, then to the Genre, "Nautical." You will find a countless supply of books, historical, fiction and adventure about sailing ... and here is the important part: Listen carefully, its true . . . THEY ARE ABSOLUTELY FREE!!! Download them like crazy, read the first few pages or chapters, and if you don't like it, simply delete. "Nothing ventured, Nothing gained." All you can lose under the worst case scenario is a little of your time. Some of them are actually pretty good.

Re: Looking for Sailing Adventure Books
Books by Webb Chiles - I recommend them all and he has republished most on Kindle. He sent me THE FIFTH CIRCLE: the passage log on pdf but the Kindle version is better. It was his fifth circumnavigation. He has a website that is worth taking a look at - http://inthepresentsea.com - and updates his journal often.

Re: Looking for Sailing Adventure Books
"True Spirit" by Jessica Watson...
This young lady sailed around the world at the age of sixteen, non-stop. 210 days at sea. But the book begins when her dream did at the age of eleven. The hurdles she had to overcome, Dylexic for one and personal fears for another. The training she did to learn to sail and acquiring her master's license on her sixteenth birthday. The boat that had to be rebuilt for the voyage and many other goals before going forth on that epic voyage.
This is a book for all children from eight to eighty.... And may inspire you into doing more then playing with toy boats in the bathtub.
