Free: Dashew Offshore Cruising Encyclopaedia
Steve Dashew has always been a hero of mine.
His Offshore Cruising Encyclopaedia is regarded as the bible.
It has until recently been an expensive book, but it has been very generously just been offered as a free download. Along with his other books (which are also strongly recomended) it is available here:

Re: Free: Dashew Offshore Cruising Encyclopaedia
I quickly scanned the Weather Handbook - lots of good information. But too big to send to my kindle (same with the encyclopedia). Going to use Adobe to break each up into 2 or 3 parts so i can read on my Kindle. I bet these books are HEAVY in hardcover....

Can you give a short explanation of how to do this.

Re: Free: Dashew Offshore Cruising Encyclopaedia
when I first went to send to the Kindle (do you know how to do this? ), it said the file was too large. So I used Adobe Acrobat (not the reader) to remove the Preface and any pages I did not feel I needed. I was about to split it into 2 parts but I thought to try to send again and it went thru. Ended up in my Kindle last night.
If you need more details on any of this, send me a PM and I will generate a quick Powerpoint to do a step by step. I have been putting all my manuals onto the Kindle.

Re: Free: Dashew Offshore Cruising Encyclopaedia
Great, thanks for the tip! At a first glance quite a lot of pictures and graphics (as expected), which is not the forte of at least the older Kindles (I have the original touch), may finally find some use for the 10" Chinese e-ink I have lying around somewhere.
Great content anyway you view it!

Learned to outfit and bought two cruising boats from the Encyclopedia. The best book for beginning I ever found. Spent 3 years cruising based on the advice and never regretted any of it.
Sent from my iPad using Cruisers Sailing Forum

Re: Free: Dashew Offshore Cruising Encyclopaedia
Whoa! Thanks noelex77 and the Dashews! All money has gone to boat and coffee, and wanted but couldn't afford these. BTB, dashews' log entries for gulf of Alaska helped me make the decision whether to plot us north to avoid the fairweather grounds. (Yep.)

Re: Free: Dashew Offshore Cruising Encyclopaedia
The iPad makes the best Kindle reader for large books, (Calder's, Cornell, the Dashews, Brion Toss, etc), and magazines (Cruising World, Sail, etc).
I also loaded all the manuals for the boat's systems.
I upgraded to the iPad Pro with cellular and it's not only my manuals and magazine reader, but also my backup navigation system.
