Five books every wannabe should read.

What five books should I start off with if I know nothing of sailing?

Assume I am smarter than the average bear and I can read and comprehend quickly so length is not an issue. Pictures are not necessary unless they are necessary.

Shoot.

Re: Five books every wannabe should read.

Well you don't mention your plans, but as your on the cruisers forum I'm guessing it's to sail off into the sunset?

Here's a few I found good to read prior to cruising, as well as good onboard reference to look up occasionally. Most weather books put me to sleep after 10 pages and when I wake I forgot the last 9 pages, so any weather books are always a work in progress...

How to sail around the world - Hal Roth
Cruising handbook - Nigel Calder
Modern marine weather - david burch
Close to the wind - Pete goss
Sailing alone around the world - Joshua Slocum

Re: Five books every wannabe should read.

1 & 2 Calder's Manual and Cruising Handbook

3 Self Steering for Small Craft --- John Letcher

4 This Old Boat - 2nd Edition --- Don Casey

5 Dutton's Piloting (and/or Chapman's, but Dutton's better on navigating, Chapman's wastes a lot of space on basics)

6 Single Handed Sailing Richard Henderson (there's the online singlehanded sailing book, too)

OK, I cheated, but if I had to choose, these would be the ONLY books I'd need.

I keep referring them to others who ask.

You could also do a SEARCH on this or any other boating forum and pretty much get the same answers.

All the fiction by Tristan is great reading. Rousmaniere's stuff is great, too.

Anyone who wants to sail SF Bay: Kimball Livingston's Sailing The Bay, either edition. There are two.

Happy reading.

Agree on Sailing for Dummies, too.

Heck, ya shoulda asked for the Top Ten!

If you are on a tight budget, look for these titles on Amazon in their used books. These books are very popular and have been out for many years, so I would expect there to be many very cheap used in Amazon.
