This won't hold any cred just a place in my heart...

A little golden book called "The Sailor Dog" got it when I was about 3 and it was my first living memory of wanting to go to sea! I got a copy for my little girl and my big girl!

Robinson Crusoe.

It put me off sailing for awhile.

Actually, most of the sea stories I've read have ended in disaster.

Not an auspicious start to dreams of the ocean blue.

More Swallows and Amazons here too... I even hired a small motor boat for the afternoon in my early 20s to visit the island in the middle of Windermere in the Lake District. On the island, apart from being heavily wooded, there's a disused/abandoned rope and tire assault course and a fine anchorage in a bay hidden from view on the opposite side of the island from bowness-on-Windermere.

More recently i've been enjoying each and every Master and Commander novel in order. I haven't, however, managed to hire a 2nd rate ship of the line to pursue the fantasy!

First I remember sitting down and reading is Kon Tiki (of course) I was 9 and living on a Pearson 365 Ketch in the Bahamas for the summer with my Grandparents... scarred me for life obviously. But i did read bits of Chapmans and similar before. My Grandfathe was National Com. of the CG Aux, so it was sort of all around me.

I was 14 and growing up in Roswell NM. Yes, Roswell is so far out in the American outback that visiting aliens decided Earth had no intelligent life. Anyway, I discovered C.S. Forrester's Hornblower series. I think “Mr Midshipman Hornblower” was the first book I read. Forrester informed me that there was something else out there beyond the dusty horizon, before the past and beyond the present.

Didn't exactly read it but my mom's old boyfriend was a merchant mariner and he used come into my bedroom at night when I was 8 or 9 and read Robert Louis Stevenson to me then tell me tales of his adventures around the world at sea.
Probably embellished a lot but it lit a fire in me that never went out. He had gone to sea as a youngster during WW1 and stayed after the great war was over. At the time he was sailing converted troop tranports out of Vancouver and Seattle as a deck officer. Capt Phil

My dream started after a magazine article about a race from Buenos Aires to my hometown Punta del Este, with a picture of the boat carrying spinnaker and blooper, when I was 7 years old.....40 years later I'm living aboard.
