The Boat Who Wouldn't Float by Farley Mowat when I was 9 or so. Wait... Dad always had a copy of "Ashley's Book of Knots" around which I pored over when I was really little, and we were building Jezebel. I think I just liked the pictures. Most were too complicated for me, but I tied a lot of Monkey's Fists for a while...

I still remember the very first "real" English book (i.e. novel) I read; Charlie and the Chocolate Factory. It's memorable because I read it in the v-berth when we were living aboard, and woke my parents up at 3am to inform them that I'd completed my first book.

Sea Devil by Felix Graf von Luckner .
Not sure who wrote the American translation.It was given to me by my uncle when I was 13 .When I was 14 I was given a girrrrl´s book by my aunt. Can´t remember the title of that one....

First was definitely Treasure Island, followed close by The Swiss Family Robinson and Robinson Crusoe (took me a while at that age to figure out they weren't related).

Then in school I remember being fascinated with the classical literature sea stories like the Odyssey.

First since I really started realizing this is something I want and can do was How To Sail Around the World by Hal Roth.

My first book was called By way of wind.and I have read it several times since then.
I found at one time in a thrift store,a ton of great sailing books for about .25/.50 usd. a piece.
Got everything tristan jones had wrote,along with alot of sheritan house books on sailing.
Far to many good ones to mention,all for under 20.00 usd. for over 50 sailing books.
It was a great score.
Would post up a list if anyone is interested just shoot me a pm and I will compile one.

Another 'Swallows and Amazons' devotee. Encouraged me to learn to sail in a 420 sailing dinghy which eventually led to a circumnavigation under sail with my wife and children.
