Gibbous, For what it's worth, IMO it will take a very determined attitude, a willingness to keep a positive outlook and learning from each experience. Personally, I have never been denied anything I wanted that I was willing to WORK for to achieve.

The quiz (Ulysses Quotient?) at the beginning of that book is IMO brilliant!

Not so fast....

[Liberty28 wrote: IMHO, Fatty Goodlander doesn't need a boat; he's quite capable of floating high and dry on his ego alone!!! But in a nice way...... not!]

Ah!!! Well, I don't disagree that Fatty calls 'em as he sees 'em, that he is full of shameless self promotion and in the opinion of many he could stand with a healthy dose of humility.
But that wasn't the question, was it?

Regardless of whether you like his writing or his personality, you cannot deny that he has been crusing on little or no money for his entire adult life... and before. Much of his writing is about how he has done it (and yes, his ego shines right through), but at the same time he makes very valid arguments for how it can (and should) be done small and inexpensively. And his irreverent style is entertaining in the same way as that certain other (heavily tattood and outspoken) lifestyle cruiser/writer with an odd name we all know and love.

Case in point, see Fatty's article in the November 2008 issue of that other rag, Cruising World.

This is not to say he is the best or that there aren't others. But he is one of the current voices in the "Church of Cruising on a budget"

Now I have to get to work ....
so I can afford my over priced, full of bells and whistles boat.

Happy cruising.

Cheers
Paul

What about that guy who designed the Polynesian style cats and sail naked with the young ladies....what was his name....Wharram....James Wharram
He had an interesting philosophy......and I think it was conducive to a tight budget.

"Buehler's Backyard Boatbuilding" - George Buehler
Gord recommended me this book in another thread. Now all I can think about is building a sailboat with materials that I already have around me. Of all the books I've read between my personal, high school, and college life, this one might have struck me the most.

Life changing is the only good way to describe it.

Thanks for the input everyone. I finally ordered Self Sufficient Sailor, Incredible Voyage by Tristan Jones, and Buehler's Backyard Boatbuilding. I think that should be a pretty good cross section to get me started.

Take inspiration from Tristan Jones, just don't take it all litterally.

Reading the Atom Voyages link in this thread was interesting. I was reading along and some pictures of refits came up. That picture named Stonehorse is absolute beautiful! Had to stop for a while and wipe the drool off my chin!

I launched my current 31 footer in 84 with $4,000 in her and by the time I got her sailing and moved aboard I had $6,000 in her.I have cruised to Mexico and back and did two trips to Tonga and back as welll s 24 years of cruising 11 months a year , most of it on the BC coast. She is far safer to cruise in than 90% of= the far more expensive boats I see out cruising. For what I use her for, she is light years more efficient.
We are awash in very inexpensive used gear some in new condition. There is no excuse for boats to be as expensive as they are.
My book covers the methods I use.
