Hydrogen fuel cell generator

Hey guys!

We have been working 1,5 years on a hydrogen fuel cell electric generator, which would be perfect for maritime market. It is lightweight, quiet*and since it works on hydrogen, emits nothing but water. Also, it is maintenance free, because there are no moving parts!
Maybe you'd be so helpful to share your thoughts on the product, would it satisfy your needs, do you see any problems with it, etc. Would you see it as part of your gear?

What generators are you currently using, heavy batteries, wind generators?

More information and pictures can be found on our partner's website:https://www.ropeye.com/fuel-cell-1/

Thanks!

Re: Hydrogen fuel cell generator

saw a similar product at the National Association of Broadcasters convention about
10 years ago, designed for remote broadcasting
Problem was and is transportation of fuel
At present a military item only

The U.S. Department of Energy lists just 34 public hydrogen fueling stations in the country; all but three are in California.

Re: Hydrogen fuel cell generator

So far, this is the only one working on hydrogen. There are 2-3 competitors, but they use methanol and propane for instance, plus their max power output is >35x times lower.

Definitely hydrogen infrastructure is a problem currently for many places, but it is developing so rapidly and even now in some countries it won't be much of a problem to buy hydrogen (e.g Japan). South-Korea has plans for 310 H2 stations by 2022. Also, separating H2 from water (by electrolysis) is getting cheaper and more efficient.

The cost today is 12,500€ (pre-order is 8,500€), but that's solely because the scale of manufacturing is so low. We've only just launched the product for pre-sale and will cut the costs as soon as we can manufacture in greater quantities.

Love the idea. Let me know when the price comes down to $1000.

Just look at the AMPs output and the price and stay off.

Re: Hydrogen fuel cell generator

I like the concept and been following manufacturers of fuel cells for quite a few years. Ballard seems to be making some real progress although they just had a class action filed against them for allegedly hyping up their acceptance in China. I have a diesel generator that I'd love to replace (in time) but fuel cells currently don't have the output I need and readily available sources for hydrogen is a definite problem. And lastly, I don't have the resources to be an early adopter of this technology but I wish you well...

Can you start an engine with it?

Re: Hydrogen fuel cell generator

Just need a Hydrogen Generator to fill the fuel cell.

Re: Hydrogen fuel cell generator

Get on the internet and scroll through some of the articles related to "ammonia as a fuel source". I think you may be surprised at the issues and will probably wonder why anyone would consider compressed hydrogen. However, I wish them all the best.
The real problem does seem to be the energy density of cryogenic-ally processed hydrogen and its standardized availability.

For ammonia, better catalysts to release the hydrogen is a major issue. Have a look.
I suspect that vested interests and general inertia wield the greatest power when it comes to any fuel management alternatives. Technology advances rapidly in a vacuum as the internet has shown, but is incredibly sluggish in the face of vested interests.

However, as ammonia is currently transported safely all over place then the major physical obstacle seems to be already addressed. Read the articles. Interesting.

400 watt continuous it says. So this big jolt for starting loads comes from the charged up Li-on batteries or super-caps inside I guess?

Re: Hydrogen fuel cell generator

I like the idea, but at this time -- in the United States, at least -- the infrastructure simply does not exist to support it.
