windows pulled

we need to pull our front windows in the pilot house as the sealant has decayed and is compromised. (having leaks and we have been able to narrow the area down) We are being told (from window people) that the boat has to go to the yard and boat needs pulled (not cheap). Questioning this as why they can't pull 1 window at a time and redo the sealant and put the window back. Hey they do it every day on cars. Or are they just being lazy and want an easy way to do their job.

It was portlights, not pilot house windows, but I had to do that last year. A fellow who works around the marina had a good reputation, so I got him to do the work at the dock.

It's a nasty job. He did it, though. Insisted on using Sika, which he said is what the manufacturers use.

There's no reason but convenience for your window people to want the boat pulled. It may be, however, that the cost of going back and forth to your dock carrying all their gear and supplies with them is higher than the cost of the haulout. The only way you can find out is to talk with some others who can do the work, and see what offers you get.

It's not quite as easy as pulling them, resealing and replacing them. The frames probably need to be ground down as well as the window edges (If they are acrylic) and many slips wont allow that kind of work with other boats around. Using Sika is a hell of a messy job but there's still no reason it can't be done in the water.
