What to pay for a hull waxing?
I'm not sure if this is the correct forum for this question, but here goes:
I was quoted $800.00 in a boat yard recently to wax and buff the hull above the waterline of my 36' Nauticat motorsailer. From the waterline to the toerail is about 3' so (if my math is correct) that would be around 108 square feet of surface area. It sounded like a lot of money for a one day job to me so I declined the offer. What does everyone think is a fair price for this?

That's 22 a ft that should include the top. Here they quote 20 plus per foot top and side.

Re: What to pay for a hull waxing?
For the topsides on a 44 footer was about $200 in 2000. Not sure what today , but about a 2 hour job. (power buff and wax) No compounding.

The quote I received was for the bootstripe to the toerail only. Topsides would have been extra.

FYI: "Topsides" is from the bottom paint to the toe rail.

Re: What to pay for a hull waxing?
One of the cheapest yards around my area in Texas, charges $18.00/ft (to 37') or $25.00/ft for over 37'....
Other quotes were a fair bit higher.

Well, that's sort of what I thought also, and is why I declined the offer.
I was having some other rather expensive work done in the yard and I think they (a yard contractor) saw me comeing.

Re: What to pay for a hull waxing?
Then say NO, and look for other options, here the waxing dudes charge 15 U$ per hour, one guy brushing wax compound or polish and the other buffing with the machine, they are really fast and the finish looks really nice if your gelcoat is not so bad, i see this dudes waxing a Oceanis 55 in a day... 800 sound to much!!!

Well, I think I got the answers that I expected. I wasn't about to pay $800.00 US for something that I could probably do myself in two days by hand.
Thanks to all who replied.

Buy a buffer and do it yourself. Save heaps of money.

Re: What to pay for a hull waxing?
$20 - $25 per foot for the entire boat (above the waterline) is what they charge around here. Of course if you are somewhere where labor is cheap it should be less. Some people include materials in the quote, some do not.

Re: What to pay for a hull waxing?
I work in one of the pricier yards around and we'd bill about half that for a simple cleaner wax job. That said, there is a wide range of possible options, from one-step (cleaner wax) to wet sanding and polishing through multiple products. More information would be required as to exactly what the bid entails. If it included making more than a single pass with a single product, due to gelcoat oxidization, it could be a good deal. Skilled detail crew will get much better results much faster than the amateur. Of course, if it's just for a wax job and no more, then they tried to gouge you.
