Watches with tide tables

Before I left Sydney I bought a Rip Curl tide watch. In addition to the time you can choose the name of the a beach anywhere in the world and the watch will display details of current tide (height, rising, falling) and the times of the next low and high tides.

I found this functionality extremely useful when coming in to unfamiliar harbours. When combined with the chart plotter and the sounder I have everything I need to navigate shallow waters, anchor, set scope, and predict currents. At 1am when the boat swings and I wake, I can easily see on the watch that the tide current changed, rather than the wind. It is also useful when leaving the dinghy on the beach, going for a long walk, fishing, or surfing.

I do believe more sailors would benefit from buying one of these watches.

Re: Watches with tide tables

I can certainly attest. My sailing watch is a Casio ProTrek and is what I affectionately call my "nerd watch". It has lunar and tide tables, a solid state compass and a barometer. I usually try to find tide predictions for wherever I am, but in a pinch, having them on my wrist is handy for sure.
