my solution after years of cursing, bleeding and spilling fuel. our boat has narrow side decks at the fills. i started with a tapered balsa thru hull plug. drilled one hole to accept a 1/2" ID hose and another hole to accept a 1/4" ID hose. Both hoses need to be very snug in the plug. position the larger hose so it sets on the forward bottom of the can and silicone it into place. trim the other end of the large hose so it fits into the deck fill with the can upright. the small hose only needs to be about a foot long. 3-4" in the can, the rest out.
now, fill your cans as usual using the regular caps and secure on deck. when needed, bring cans to deck fill, remove cap, insert tapered plug, put big hose in deck fill and blow lightly in small hose. if you tilt the can as it nears empty it will syphon almost every drop. also will work on a half full can.
some cruisers i have shown this to made the same setup for their water cans.

Bottleinamessage,
What you are describing sounds like a sophisticated version of what was shown me by a delivery captain.
He used a 5 ft length of 1 1/4 inch hose inserted to the bottom of the jug, other end into the tank (on which the jug was sitting). He then wrapped and pressed a rag around the hose where it entered the jug, leaving a small gap to blow into, starting the siphon.
That big hose would drain the 25 liter jugs in seconds. Helps if there is not much airspace in the jug when starting this process.

That is unbelievably offensive especially coming from a moderator. You may want to adjust your vocab to 2009.
Also I like the new cans and have had nothing but luck with them.

Taken in context, I tend to agree with him.
I really, really don't like the "new style cans"........well.......not the cans really, but the spouts.

Yeah, that term is very dated and is similar to using other racial slurs. Not cool. But to stay on track, are the cans everyone is griping about the one's with a short spout and a grey tab with a switch on them?

My complaint will most of the newer cans is the nozzle. They are either slow pouring (the kind with the internal vent) or the kind that must be depresses in order to obtain fuel flow. Now trying to do that underway or not, added to a narrow side deck, plus you have to hold the tank up while fueling. My system enables me to refuel faster and easier with the tank sitting on the deck.

Has anyone got a recommendation for jerrycans (or some other container) that have a good, secure, cap? The new ones here all use the spout as the cap, and this is fragile at best. I use one of those "shaker" siphons, and would rather not have a spout at all.

You can buy plain replacement caps at some chandleries-I bought them at Downwind Marine in San Diego fairly recently. Also bought some self venting spouts with float valves in place of an external nozzle shutoff that close with a tight seal for use on jugs without a separate vent. I bought them in La Paz, but have seen them at the local West Marine, and they pour pretty well. I transfer fuel using a hose over the nozzle and into the tank fill so the current generation of ill conceived jugs are of no use-they spill diesel everywhere.

Hunsaker Racing fuel cans
I have used one of these for years now. I first got it for our dirt bikes, but it works so well i use it for everything. i like the fact that it doesn't turn over easy in the back of the truck or in the boat.
It is kind of expensive. I think you can get it in several colors in addition to the Clear. you NEVER get leaks out of the vent and it pours really fast.

You can find the old style replacement nozzels at Walmart for around four dollars. Also check Lowes Home Improvement stores for the old diesel cans. I was told they had so many of the new ones returned the were going back to the old ones.
