Simrad wp500

On an Alberg 35, (wheel helm) I installed a Simrad wp500, an old unit that had never been installed before. When I installed it a red light came on, but I could get nothing else. Simrad said they would not have anything due to the age of the unit. Does anyone have any idea what may be the problem.

I only wish to use the unit for light use...set sails...go below...pull anchor...and whenever I need a quick hand. The boat has a Monitor wind vain system for long open water.

i had that unit,but havent used one in quite a few years after it broke.

i seem to remember that the red led came on when it made a coarse change ie when it supplied power to the motor in the drive unit.

my guess is there is corrosion on the brushes and it is not making contact from standing so long.

take the back off and check that the spring loaded brushes are free to make contact with the armature,and the rotor contact point is shiny copper.

i may be wrong about the light but worth a try!
