Sailorsmap Useful?

I am sailing-enthusiast and software-developer. Some days ago i wanted to get an overview about several cruising destinations via google-maps, but found it quite hard to get the informations at a glance on the map.
So i implemented a small webpage that searches nautical informations in google and displays it via google-maps. I published it at www.sailorsmap.com. I had fun implementing it, but now am wondering if such a tool already existed before and if the tool is helpful/useless/great/silly... i just dont know...

If the "Enter" button brought up more than just a blank screen, I might be able to add a comment but blank screens just don't do it for me...James

Hmmm, which OperationSystem and which Browser do you use?

I tested successfully on Windows/Linux/Apple with Explorer/Firefox/Chrome and also on iPhone and Android...

technically this is just a google-map with javascript, so it should work everywhere.

Wolfgang

Re: sailorsmap useful?

A new window showing the map should open. If you accept geolocation in your browser, the map centers to your actual location.

You could also try the direct link to the map:
www.sailorsmap.com - localized Nautical Information at your fingertips

Re: sailorsmap useful?

Both links opened, for me (Vista / Firefox). Once I allowed my computer to "share my location" (mouse click), it displayed a Google map, centered on my actual street address, and showing numerous local services (banks, schools gas stations, marinas, etc).

Exactly where and how did you find and activate "share my location?"

Somewhere on the opening screen. Now that I "share", it no longer appears, and I open on my home location.

Sorry to be a pest, but what "opening screen?" Google Map/Earth or some other application or in the operating system?

Re: Sailorsmap Useful?

Switching on/off the geolocation can be done as described here:
Remove GeoLocation Permission for Websites in Firefox
, works similar in other browsers.

...as also mentioned in the FAQ of the sailorsmap page.

Wolfgang

Re: Sailorsmap Useful?

I refer to the sailorsmap screen that opens from the posted links.

I too did not get the share location option and hence got a blank screen on enter. I am using win7 and Firefox.

Re: Sailorsmap Useful?

I just took a short view and didn't find it much more helpful than a google earth map. On my google earth map there is a latitude and longitude listed at the bottom of the page that is for the location of the cursor and I can use that information for navigating. I didn't see that on your map.

kind regards,

Re: Sailorsmap Useful?

Thanx, the latitude/longitude issue was a good idea.
I just implemented it, so on the right bottom you should now see the lat/long of the cursor.

I also made modifications regarding loading of the map, so the "empty page" problems mentioned above by some of you hopefully are solved. would be good if some of you could confirm this...
