Portlights ... Replacements

What do you recommend? What should I avoid?

Re: Portlights... Replacements

I've seen some very nice refits with "New Found Metals", but your best resource might be looking at what others have done with their '70's Islanders.

Portlights can be a lot of things so you might want to be a bit more specific. Here is our replacement and we are very satisfied, The Trawler Beach House: 15 Steps To New Ports On The Boat . Chuck

Re: Portlights ... Replacements

We replaced ours, frames and glass complete three or four years ago. We built new frames from teak for the insides, and ditched frames on the outside, laying the glass flush to the deck. That way no water gets trapped in the frames, and we still have completely watertight portlights. We also ditched the stupid, crackly perspex, and had beautiful new windows cut from mirrored tempered glass. Beautiful - I should get a photo

The opening hatches were a different story, and did require us to make new frames - but that's beyond the scope of this thread.

I bought 7 Lewmar portlights on eBay. NOS with amazing price - less than 1/4 of the list price.
Now, I have a very well ventilated, lighten and dry boat. Perfect finish and very good quality.

I still need the mosquito screens, tough.

Re: Portlights... Replacements

Chuck, I have a Iona 32 sailboat, the windows that do not open on the side of the boat and the two that do is what I thought where portlights. Ports go from the side and hatches from the top, right? Anyways I removed all of them and need to replace them now. :-)

Saucy, how exactly did you mount the tempered glass? Can you please share some photos?
