The down side of using a float to provide spring in a
mooring system is that when the float pulls down it generates a fairly substantial lifting force on the
anchoring element. If the French are using fairly massive blocks or screw in anchors this is probably allowed for.
The up side is that this system has nothing dragging around on the bottom damaging corals or other seabed flora.
The mass and float system is used in
offshore oil and gas fields so that boats don't have to drop anchors which might foul pipe lines.
Where perhaps five tons of
anchor and chain will hold sufficiently, a 20 ton block of concrete would be used with the mass and buoy system. Definitely a permanent
installation rather than a casual
anchoring system.
