Nav table lid support

Saw this lid support at a boat show recently. It's 2 pieces, one fits into the other and are held together with an internal bungee.

Anyone have any idea where the can be purchased?

Why so complicated/expensive?

Take a piece of wood, round one end and mount it on the inside of your table with a screw.

I am considering that too. Would probably attach the wood to the lid so it can't be knock out of place.

You could fabricate one out of a tent pole, preferably one made out of aluminum, & over 1/2" (12mm) in diameter (such as are used on Eureka A-frame tents). But any pole material or size would do really, as long as it's set up to bungee the male & female bits together like that. And making the other pieces would take longer to type than to fabricate.
Also, were it me, I'd make one for either side of the lid. So that when it gets bumped hard, all of the load doesn't stack up on the one side at an obtuse, gear maiming, angle.

A wood one won't corrode. It is simple and works just great.

What a wonderful 50 $ solution to a 50 cent problem!

My solution? turns out that my parallel rulers are just the right length, so I use them when I need to hold up the nav station lid. If they were not the right length, a bit of timber dowel will surely do the job... and you could varnish it every few weeks just to keep busy!

You could also use a Gas strut, similar to the type used in the hatch back motor vehicles to hold up the tail gate, that is presuming cost is not a issue

Ohhh dear, no,no,no! Not glossy for goodness sake. A hand rubbed satin finish will reduce the chance of glare and nasty reflections in your eyes whilst searching through the piles of PAPER charts in the table... or looking for the manual for the chart plotter to find the master reboot combination.

Please keep your glossy finishes for the faux teak cabin sole...

I think I may have seen one recently similar to that at the Mall. Boaters Navigation Table Support Depot. The store is near the food court on the second floor.. Not so expensive if I remember right, around $99. US

For you word-nerds out there, I believe the term most widely accepted as being the correct term is "lid stay" and if you are searching for a fancy one you might have better luck with it.

I say correct even though I know it should be called a "lid strut" since it is very obviously in compression and any lubber knows you can't push on a rope.

Kinda like the "tension rods" people use to support their shower curtains that work by pushing against two opposite walls. Sigh.

My Hunter 2007 model has the exact same strut as shown in the photo, maybe Marlow Hunter can supply or know who supplies

I think if you want to go that route Uncivilized advice is the best. If you're looking for other creative solutions lots of good ones here.

My chart table is held up by a slide latch, like the kind on outhouse doors. It just slides into a whole drilled in the adjacent bulk head. It works fine.

How about a SS hatch spring? Inexpensive ($6.88 on eBay) and works fine. It's best to install 2, one on each side to prevent unintentional closing of the lid if you bump into one.

I had them for 13 years and never had the nav lid close unexpectedly.
